Samples would be helpful. Can you cut a clip from either of the tracks you mentioned.

Sorry, but you aren't going to be able to get a sound as phat as the one in blade from software. You're going to need hardware synths if you want it that high quality and pure.

I think you are referring to the very famous "acid" lead from the Roland TB-303.

It's indeed very difficult to have a convincing sound in software for that squelchy lead, but it can be done with some effort. The best recreation to date is Audiorealism's Bassline VSTi in my opinion ( http://www.audiorealism.se/)

Actually, a few years back, I was reading that the acid sound from New Order - Confusion (Blade theme song) came from Propellerheads Rebirth (remember that one?) run through some external distortion effect(s).

You can get very close to that sound with software - it's all about the distortion. I know I can get very decent acid sounds from V-Station, ES2 and Virus|PoCo.

By far the best software version of the 303 is the Audiorealism Bassline plug-in already mentioned. However, it's really the distortion you're using that will give it the hard-ass quality in the tracks you mentioned. Antares Tube is probably the best distortion plug-in I've come across. The overdrive in the Waldorf D-Pole is really fat as well (as long as you don't turn it up much past 25 or so).

what a cop-out..

man.. it's so funny reading that.. you won't be able to do it.. blah fucking blah.. TRY! it's so easiely dismissed as 'can't be done with software'.. why? coz it doesn't have a preset?

i'm pritty sure that DJREMIDI is right.. i read that same thing.. so, get a copy of fruity, get a copy of rebirth338 (or the Audiorealism's Bassline VSTi), rewire the fuck*er up and wack some good distortion on it.. and bob is your Mc Fucking uncle; you have the blade acid sound

geez...

I would have to agree here. I think too much stock has been placed on hardware. What drives this hardware is software. Software that has been pre-programed and burned on a chip. Take the EMU 9090 for instance. It's soundbanks are all samples stored on ROMs. Those same samples are available in SF2 format and can be used on a computer.

Bear in mind that the hardware is a dedicated solution and is designed to do what it does well. A software solution tweaked will give the same result.

try AudioRealism Bassline, it's a very good TB-303 clone (the synth that makes the infamous rave-sound you're talking about ). But You'll need high-quality distortion for this, and there's nothing better than analog hardware distortion :P you can try some software ones, you might get a decent sound, but it will be harder to do than with analog hardware!

nonsense vanguard is a SICK acid making machine. ill post a sample of a hard house track im working on with a brutal 303 line in. made in vanguard. 1 oscillator on saw wave, slight detune on the LFO, filter nearly fully closed on any of the bandpass filters (not X or M) (and crucially not fully closed. open it slowly to increase the intensity of the acid sound), resonance nearly all the way up (but not fully - it sounds shit if its all the way up. the resonance parameter is what makes that harsh honking/acidic sound and is crucial to a good hard 303 acid line). on the amp, i have the drive set to around 1 o clock for harder, crunchier kind of sound and the PAN spread set to about 10 o clock so it hovers slightly in stereo. on the amp envelope i have 0 attack, decay at around 2 o clock, 0 sustain and release at around 9 o clock. cutoff around 2 o clock. on the filter envelope, attack is 0, decay is around 1 o clock, sustain is around 1 o clock, release is 0. i have a touch of reverb on it and a touch of delay. also an EQ on it with a slight bump around 1300 hz just to give it a touch more of a telephone quality so that it cuts right through. ill post a sample later.

EDIT: 40 second demo of a hard house tune im working on right now. has an acid line in it which is 1 instance of vanguard. i was going to use muon tau but it lacked that bite that vanguard had. the settings above are pretty much how this one was created so you should be able to get similar results.

CLICK ME FOR DIRTY ACID GOODNESS. YUM YUM.
