Question: How to make good sounding percussion? Where each element goes?

Hi,

I have been producing trance for a long time but when I create my percussion I just experiement arround for a good sound. I never really thought whats the OPTIMUM position for some elements.

In reality I don't know where should the open hat/closed/ride hat go for an effective sounding trance percussion. I just choose what sounds "good"

Can someone give me a nice arrangement given these elements:

1. Kick
2. Clap
3. Snare
4. Closed Hat
5. Open Hat
6. Hi Hat
7. Some Perc Element
8. Ride

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

N.

First of all, an open hat and a closed hat are both hi hats, so your sixth element is kind of pointless. I'll just replace it with another closed hi hat because with two you can get a nice rhythm.

1. Kick = K
2. Clap = C
3. Snare = not used except in builds or breakbeats generally
4. CHH1 = h - panned left
5. CHH2 = j - panned right
6. OHH = O
7. Shaker = S
8. Ride = R

K - - - K - - - K - - - K - - -
- - - - C - - - - - - - C - - -
- h - h - h - h - h - h - h - h
- - J J - - J J - - J J - - J J
- - O - - - O - - - O - - - O -
- - - S - - - S - - - S - - - S
R - - - R - - - R - - - R - - -

This is a basic, pretty standard trance rhythm. It will sound boring as hell if you dont expand upon it. Good luck.

I love those letter percussion thingys, they help out so much

I'll actually share my latest track percussion.

K = Kick
C = Closed Hat
O = Open Hat
c = Clap
r = Reverb Clap
W = Wood
N = Closed Hat (With more Reverb)

K---K---K----K---
-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-
--O---O---O---O--
----C--------C---
----r------------
WWW--------------
----N--N---------

Add Reverb to the Wood, lol... A little reverb & delay to the hi-hats,
