My favorite is H2O compressor. It can give you very VERY gritty results if you set the treshold and amount too high, but it is extremely good for kicks. + It's free

PSP WintageWarmer is really good, I use it alot, it gives you a very nice effect, but it's not so free..

blockfish is also free, but I don't haven't tried it much

But yes, Waves C4 is the best you can get for mastering, no question about that. but it COSTS! ... ALOT!! ... REALLY! :P

I put this up around Christmas. PSP Classic Compressor (and others) Its not the greatest, but in all honesty I think it's the best free compressor out.

Classic Compressor and BlueLine should be two freeware ones as well.

As mentioned, the Classic Kjaehaus Compressor is a "given" if you're looking for free...its actually really good!

If you have the bucks though, there's no beating the Waves C4 Multiband Compressor.

Now that I think about it, its going to depend on a lot of factors. The best compressor I've come across in terms of sound IS the Waves. The easiest to use is the Classic, but the most comprehensive that I've seen is the Sonitus FX Multiband.

For any logic users would you say the Waves compressor is significantly better than the standard compressor that comes in the logic effects???

actually there is another sweet vst compressor that is amazing for drums...its in the T-Racks Budle...it can slam out some serious drums..but isn't free. Its very warm and has a nice overdrive feature as well. Very simple too use.

How decent is the Fruity Compressor??? Just wondering, b/c I used to use that for my songs and I could never get the tracks to fit together.

i use floops compressor for everything - hmmm it rocks! most internal fruity FX plugins rock! and they are really easy to use which is always a bonus. the last track i wrote had 4 kick drum stack that was tuned and bounced down. whacked a hard floops compressor on it. then put it into the rest of my drum track which has another floops compressor on the master channel. the 1/16th hats cover up the hiss that you get with overcompression. the upside? i made my kick drum absolutely fucking HUGE. its a decent compressor. i cant really be arsed with any others really although i may be tempted to try a multiband compressor (like c4) just because compressing certain frequency ranges is the kind of versatility i would love to have with the floops compressor. would be an amazing tool for any producer to have. so i can see why c4 gets the thumbs up quite alot around here. but i prefer to keep it simple. get it right. like ockham's razor in action.
