Editing Tracks (re edits etc)

I love to re edut my songs using acid etc and have a couple questions for everyone

1. is this completely illegal?

2. What kind of things do you edit?

3. What software do u use to edit them?

I edit breakdowns mainly, sometimes they are just too long and people can lose interest, i just move sutf around to keep the energy up etc, nothing kills the mood like too many huuge breakdowns *cough* JXL *cough*..

I use acid 4.0 because my school gives every student a copy for free, imsure there are better or worse programs, but i like registered software.

1) yes they are illegal without permission from the copyright owner. most places and artists won't care, but you do have to be careful.

2) i don't edit

3) if i were to edit, i would use a program such as cool edit (or adobe audition as it now is)

01. In Holland it's illegal to do edits, even when you don't add anything extra but just change the build-up.

02. I edit tracks that are longer then 8 minutes because the build-up usually is boring when tracks go over the 10 minutes. (not always though!)

03. Sound Forge 6.0

100% illegal. they will fuck you up the ass with a big stick if they want to

2. What kind of things do you edit?

porn. rarely edit tracks as i dont like using cd to be honest. I have done a few with stupid intros and outros... Mylo- 'in my arms' being the most recent i have done.

3. What software do u use to edit them?

Cool edit pro, cubase VST or logic platinum have served me well. Soundforge is good too.

Back in the day i used to edit using a reel to reel tape machine and a splicing kit (im a trained studio engineer dontcha know.....)

or i can dump them on to my akai s3000 and have a lot of fun with them on that

Dam, I didn't know it was so illegal, I woulda thought as long as you own the track then your free to do with it as you like, whats the difference in say, editing a track to make some extra beats aswell as cut some here and there, and doing it on the fly with your mixer?, obviously your free to mess around with the track while mixing, but what makes it so different if you just do it with a program so you got time to do other things when mixing.

So does this mean that basically almost all the remixes in the Production forum are illegal?

That can be a tricky area but vastly depends on whether or not you use samples from the original track. And as such they are not illeagal as they are not intended for public performance. A lot of these guys actually do a lot of work on the tracks. But melodies are often copyrighted.

Do I edit tracks and make them shorter etc. No I don't, I actually don't think that's fair on the original artist.

I do however limit the amount of tracks that I play in a set with long breakdowns and people these days don't really want to hear it.

Cheers
Nem
