heya all

im using a pair of cdj 100 and im very satisfied. the thing is that i want to get into turntables.

my friend got a pair of very (but very) simple geminis, older than XL-200, but bearly used. He might get it for me for low price. My question is if its better to save for top-notch technics, or just buy those simple geminis. I'll also say its ment for home use only.

Yours, MadCow.

well sooner or later you're going to want to upgrade to the better stuff so i say you save up because otherwise the money that you put towards the cheap geminis is money that could have gone toward your new 1200s.

wait and save. best option, whether its home use only or if you're an aspiring club DJ.

I say go for the geminis, use the extra money to get some records. The best decks in the world won't do you any good if you have no records.

+1 as long as they're direct drive

belt driven decks (esp cheap brand ones like mine) wont perform near as well as a DD deck and your results will be alot different - you're used to CD decks which i imagine are pretty accurate when you're adjusting the pitch fader, belt drives just wont cut it... they might for a while, but you'll find yourself wanting a DD in no time but then you'll find yourself in a dilemma cus you want to save for new decks but then theres that one track at the record store tht you really want, then theres another track, and another....

as soon as you get a pair of TTs you'll find yourself spending quite a bit on vinyl, so my suggestion to you is to buy some quaity decks, doesnt have to be the best, but you certainly dont want toys, then spend the rest on vinyl and styli and record bags and all the other fun stuff that comes with becoming a vinyl DJ

if you really wanna get into vinyl DJing, get something you like, cus once you have decks you're infected

I always laugh at the people that cringe and ache at the thought of belt drives. Not that I don't disagree...if you have the opportunity to get directs...by all means, but don't think the fact that they are belts, that they won't play a record. I've had and used belts for 7 years, and with practice and getting to know how my decks work...I'm just as good with them as with directs.

Yes, my next set of decks will be directs, when I find it economically viable (why replace what hasn't broke yet)...but if it's what you can afford at the time...it's better than nothing...(seven years ago, there was a steep price gradient between belts and entry level direct).

I recommend directs if you can get em...if you want to go high end right away get 1200's...but if you are just starting out...don't know if you will make this 'your gig' for years to come or will have ample amounts of cash in the future to buy whatever top end...don't discount a good deal if it's what you can afford and "can't live w/o" it. If you can spend more now...then might as well spend even a little extra and get into something nice.

my 2¢...then again...I'm prolly a freak
