Double shooting a ‘random act’
Area residents, students shaken by sudden act of violence

Police believe a double shooting near the downtown campus of George Brown College last night is a “random act” and are urging students and citizens not to overreact.
“I don’t believe there’s a reason to fear walking on our own streets,” Det. Sgt. Neil Corrigan said this morning.

Two women were wounded after three to five gunshots were fired at 8:10 p.m. in the George and Front Sts. area yesterday.

Witnesses reported hearing a “pop, pop, pop” sound, Corrigan said. Most thought it was a car backfiring and ignored it.

The first victim, a 24-year-old woman, was shot in the thigh at Front and George Sts. as she escorted a student to the subway as part of George Brown’s Safe Walk Program.

A second female victim, 28, was struck in the stomach a block away at King and George Sts. as she walked with her husband and another companion. She underwent surgery this morning.

Both victims are expected to recover.

Though the unrelated victims were about 50 metres apart, police believe the bullets were fired from a single gun at the same time.

“We’re looking at one shooting. It happened in rapid succession,” Det. Sgt. Corrigan said at the scene. “The victims were struck almost immediately. They were just out for the evening, walking with friends.”

Police closed George St. between Front St. and The Esplanade this morning while tracking dogs combed the street for clues.

There is no indication whether the weapon was a handgun or a rifle.

Melanie Wilson, 31, was driving toward her George St. apartment last night when she saw a security guard helping a woman who was clutching her stomach.

“I didn’t know what happened,” Wilson said this morning. “But my sister, who lives in the building, heard the shots. She didn’t think they were gunshots. ... We put it all together last night when we heard the news.”

"I’m nervous that a guy is going around taking shots at random," George Brown student Emily Stocks, 19, said this morning. "It changes the way you go to school. We’re not going to want to stay late or wander by ourselves."

Stocks expressed concern that there did not seem to be any additional security precautions taken by the school.

As a veteran investigator, Corrigan said, “this seems to be a random act.”

It also appears the bullets were fired at street level, Corrigan said later at a news conference at 51 Division.

Witnesses reported seeing a large, grey or silver coloured car, in the area travelling east around the time shots were heard.

Police are reviewing security videos taken by neighbourhood businesses and plan to interview the victims later in the day. They will also be reviewing case files to determine if similar crimes have taken place in the area.

“It’s worrying for the public and for the police and we want to put an end to it,” Corrigan said.

Although residents and students say the area is safe, violence has erupted there before.

Last July, music promoter Farouk Sylvester Musah was gunned down near Lower Sherbourne Ave. and the Espanade while sitting inside his white Hummer. His body was found slumped over the wheel.

No arrests have been made in connection with Musah's killing.
