Im close to loosing my temper.

Set up both my ortofon (OS Pro S) carts and stylus, and both sound shit.

The sounds is all crackly and distorted, unbearbaly bad, and it happens on both turntables. I dont understand? My old carts sounded fine, allough they were getting old so i bought a new pair. Which sound awlful.

Also, when i disconnect all the red, white, green and blue cables from the cartridge, I can hear the distortion just from putting my head close to the stylus and letting it play on a record.

So whats the problem, both my brand new styli are broken? Because both sound bad without amplification. The odds are very slim? and i couldnt have damaged them becuase i had the protective cover right up untill i tried them, and from the start both sounded real bad.


An odd thing i have noticed, and hopefully it helps, is that places in the track with no bass, sound so so so much clearer.

Any ideas, i dont want to have to retuern these to djstore.

I dont know whats wrong, but let me tell you, i feel for you.. I just bought a pair of replacements for my 680's , and one jumps across the record all by itself.. it is pissing me off.. 100+ bucks down the drain.. FUCK!!

Increase the weight on the tone arm.

In my experience I have noticed that you will get crap sound if you don't have enough weight as the stylus isn't able to sit in the groove properly.

As always you are correct.

I increaesed the tonearm weight and there has been a vast improvement in sound. To be honest I am suprised, i wouldnt have though putting more weight on would have helped. The sound quality is better now, i'll give them a few hours of play see how they get on. Allough i am concerned about record wear, becuase there is a considerable weight on the stylus and record now.

The record wear isn't greater. It's just the weight of the technics headshell that is heavier than the Ortofon. The other thing is that I beleive the weight distribution is slighly different.
I use Ortofons all the time and have no problems with any of my records for that reason.

at what point do you need to replace stylii? when you start to get bad sound? and can old stylii/stylii that need to be replaced damage records?

I believe deterioration of sound is certainlly an indication, allough its very difficult to notice sound quality deterioration unless you have the same age styli on 3 different decks, and you rarley use the 3rd deck.

Otherwise with both styli degrading at the same rate, you have no benchmark for comparison.

I also believe there are other signs, such as your stylus attracting a significant amount of dust, and of course as a general rule a bedroom dj should be looking to change stylus, i'd hazard a guess, every 8 months or so (assuming something along the lines of 1-2 hrs a day). I however have never bought new carts and stylus till the otherday as i got my table second hands, so that 8month thing might be way way off, just a guess.

Someone will be able to tell you for sure though.

And yes i do believe an old stylus can increase wear on your records, as for damage, i think its all very neglible.

You will notice more pops and louder hissing as your styli wear out, soon they start to skip over a groove on a back cue, those are the obvious signs. I usually change out my stylus every 3 months (i spin 3 hours a day 7 days a week) I use the Orotofon nightclub so it gets kind of pricey, but the sound quality and groove hold cant be beat!

mate have you tried putting more stylis pressure on because some vinyl in some parts of the song lose the groove and skip across the whole record or miss a groove, so what i did was add a bit more.

or is it a bit more complex than that for you,is it to do with stylis.
