Sound Card Problem...plz help.

i just got an echo mia midi sound card. i plugged it in, installed software, and plugged in speakers (altec lansing 5.1 system (yes i know, obviously not something to produce music on, but all i've got for now) anyways, when i connect them to the soundcard i get very bad distortion signals and clipping which are unbarable to listen to. i had to use 1/4" adapters so they could plug in to the jacks on the sound card...anyone have any idea what i'm doing wrong?

thanks very much in advance.

there are 3 mini male ends on the altec lansing speakers...a black, yellow and green end (don't know if that means a thing, the green plug seems to produce only the low end though)

ok, now i've got the wierdest problem...it sounds ok (can't tell if perfect yet) when the 1/4" chords aren't "completely" in the slot...obviously something isn't right with that...
