Ortofon Nightclubs...not worth it?

I've currently got SHURE M35X which I LOVE. No complaints. But I was just looking into different carts and styli out of curiosity and the first one I could think of when I thought "hmm...what's the best cart on the market?" was the ortofon nightclub. I think everyone's heard of the nightclubs and their notoriety...not to mention their price. i figured there must be something incredible about them.

so i did a little research
http://www.needlz.com/cartridges/m35x.asp
http://www.ortofon.com/disco/stylus/ccnce.html

and both have the same frequency response.
isn't that what will ultimately dictate sound quality?

so is there any point in forking over hundreds of $$$ to get new nightclub carts when I could just replace my M35X styli for $50 a piece?

btw...i also noticed the tracking force was LOWER on the M35X...that would mean better for preserving the vinyl, which is a big concern of mine

something you need to remember with carts; ortofons are always worth it.

the shure cart you have is great, no doubt about it, but the sound quality on the ortofons is hard to beat. the frequency response isn't the be-all and end-all of sound. just because one cart has a narrower respons doesn't mean it has poorer sound. its all about attenuation, some carts will have very punchy bass with great highs, others will have a softer bass and balanced mids and highs depending on which style of music it is made for. both may have the same frequency response.

however it is true that they will wear your recods more than the ones you have. but the sound is worth it in my books, and if you get 2 sets of styli for them (one spherical and one eliptical for recording only) it isn't much of a problem to be honest.

in my opinion, shure whitelabels are better though. they sound just as good and have better tracking and much lower record wear.

I use Ortofons and have done for years now and have to say that they are superb. You will always get people who will slate them but the truth of the matter is that it's not founded on anything and they are a great product.
I swear by them.

My latest purchase are some Ortofon Elektros and I love the sound that they give out.
Tu_face gives good sound advice as per normal. I however do not like the Shure whitelabels as much, not because they are bad but just through personal preference.

If I scratch I do have a pair of Shure M44-7s that I switch to as they are in my opinion one of the best carts for that purpose if mounted correctly.

Cheers
Nem

I'd love to tu_face but that would run me a pretty penny!

I'm getting Ortofons the GOLD ones . I'm going HIGH TECH... i hope my Stanton's can support them though lol.

I'm getting probally some brand new Numark's when they come out.

I think Ortofons are very nice myself. I don't own a pair right now. I own some Stanton's... which SUCK. But its ok I have been getting used to spinnin.

Now that i have some what experience i can now get into the big stuff.

As I said it's personal prefference and not based on any technical spec.
The reason is because when they first came out someone on this forum actually said that the sun shines out of their but and was proclaiming how crap the Ortofons were.
I responded with factual analysis and nothing more and this one guy took it personally and flamed my account for a few weeks.

It's funny how silly little things can trigger associations with objects etc.

However I do accept that Shure make some really good stuff and the whitelabels are definately no exception. They also look good.

Cheers
Nem

Don't waste your money.

Get any ortofons and you'll be more than happy. The Gold's are just show, they probably have no advantage over the others.

Remember - the difference between ortofons is the styli. Every cart is the same, the styli differs and you can interchange the different model styli. Obvioulsy get the Nightclub S (spherical) if you can afford it, but if you can't my recommendation is the Pro Silvers, they look sweet and you can always buy better styli later on. Really you can't go wrong with Ortofons, except to waste your money on Golds.

what's the difference between the nightclub's spherical and eliptical styli?

what are the pros and cons of each?

Good point!
If only there was a place around here where I could...

But from what I've gathered so far it would be a choice between the nightclub s and the whitelabel for me. Though the e has better sound quality, I don't want increased record wear.

Does anyone know which has lesser record wear?
The nightclub s
or
The whitelabel?
