Official: U.N. selects Clinton to head tsunami relief

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan has selected former U.S. President Bill Clinton to be the U.N. point man for tsunami reconstruction and ensure that the world doesn't forget the needs of the countries devastated by the December 26 disaster, a well-informed U.N. diplomat said Tuesday.

U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard refused to confirm the appointment but said "a statement will be released on the subject by my office in the next few hours."

Annan wants to appoint a special envoy not only to focus on the cleanup and reconstruction but to try to make progress on resolving conflicts with rebels in the two worst-hit countries -- Indonesia and Sri Lanka, Eckhard said.

The U.N. diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the appointment of Clinton as Annan's top envoy for the rehabilitation of tsunami-devastated countries would expand on the former president's current efforts to raise private money in the United States.

Soon after the disaster, U.S. President George W. Bush named Clinton and his father, President George H.W. Bush, to head a nationwide fund-raising effort to help countries devastated by the earthquake off Indonesia that triggered tsunamis across the Indian Ocean to Africa.

The deadly wall of water killed more than 157,000 people and displaced millions of others in 11 countries.

The two ex-presidents have been traveling throughout the country raising money and Bush said last week they hope to go to the tsunami-ravaged Indian Ocean region to illustrate the need for continued financial help from Americans to rebuild the area. He didn't say when.

Do you actually want us to say something or are you just telling us? I think anyone could go through a newspaper and post every story in it on here but please please give your opinion on it!!

I've started some of the biggest threads in here lately, even if I offered little contribution short of starting them. Most of the people who frequent this section rarely begin anything and would rather take the rebound offering their reflections on an already started topic (especially the would-be intellects, don't ask me why). So if it weren't for people like me, PDD would be much slower than it already is. I enjoy reading what people have to say here, and if the only way for me to do that is to try and start some discussion then so be it.

A lot of the time I don't really have an opinion, or my opinion is developing, but I figure others might have something to say which would provide me with the necessary fermentation to collect my thoughts.

Well, I take it all back! I didn't realise you were the single greatest factor that makes this forum tick!

No but seriously, you should contribute or offer an opinion rather than just post a newspaper article

So...what are your views on the article you posted? I assume you have an opinion on it or you wouldn't have started this (quite possiblby great) thread so you could see what others say...

Anyway, where are these "some of the biggest" threads you've started in here recently??? All I can see is an endless posting of newspaper articles with no opinion! Here's a hint - you want great threads and loads of replies??? Yea! Start threads on Israel/Palestine!!

As I said before, my opinion is developing and I like to first hear what other people have to say sometimes. So how bout you offer your opinion before you tell me to offer mine and then maybe we can get things started!
