Anyone here play guitar?

I'm thinking about trying to learn guitar. I've never learned any instrument in my life, and was just wondering if anyone has an suggestions. I am interested in buyin an electric guitar and amp nothing too expensive. I was looking into the Fender Squire series. Any suggestions?

Yes I play guitar.

To be honest with you, what type of guitar you get is not THAT important, there are many out there that sound fine and function well (and are reliable) for quite a reasonable price. Once you learn you can go for a more prestigious guitar.

I'll tell you this much. Really learn to play guitar. I don't mean your friend showing you what fingers go where, or going like "yeah uh first finger second fret third string" Or looking up Tabs on the internet. Sure tabs have great instant gratification, but I really stress that you'll be much happier in a couple of years if you learn to play for real.

I'm sure you've heard that all before, but its always good to hear it again since its oftened drowned out by "oh yeah well *guitarist McGee* doesn't know how to read music, and look where he is! He's a fuckin millionaire!"

I've been playing geetar for a good while now also. tab is definitely a good first step- while you don't learn the notes, you at least learn to really listen and pick apart a song, and you can start getting a general idea of rhythm. I wouldn't buy a martin for your first guitar, because they're fuckin expensive. I would just pick up a cheap fender acoustic or get a squier strat pack (guitar, amp, cables, picks) for like 200 bucks. and if you want to start learning improvisation and all the more technical shit, music theory is a must. I think any and all of us who actually can PLAY the guitar spent hours upon hours of practicing, so stay committed and it will pay off.

yah i play the guitar, great fun...

if ur into the more modern rock, i suggest drop tuning ur guitar (for simplicity of play) and just learn the tones and techniques used in rock/metal tunes.

also u dont need a super nice looking expensive guitar to sound good, i can get them heavy metal sounds out my red strat...it comes down to ur equipment and playing style to get the sound u want.

but if ur playing mellow tunes, get them open chords down, i struggled at first, but once u got the simple ones down, the rest are mainly easy...plus u can make stuff up easily with open chords

I always suggest running through scales all the time. It'll build up some dexterity in your fingers and get ya used to playing. then learn some theory and some chords.

Its not the devil to learn songs, I mean you can so then you have practice playing an actual song, but learn the whole song....I know a ton o people that can play parts of songs, but not a whole song.

heh, my brother gives guitar lessons and the first day he asks, do you wanna learn to play other peoples songs or do you wanna learn how to play guitar? its sad how many people pick the former.
