hearing beatmatching

Hi, when i want to no which record is faster, i seem to have the habit of just playing both records through the headphones. This is easy to tell which record is goin faster. You just take note of the kick drum sound, and then you no if it's goin faster or slower. But is this the right way? Arn't you suppose to have one through headphones and one through speakers? Becasue i find having them both through the headphones is much easier.

I basically do the same thing. I beat match in my headphones until I know I've got each track at the necessary speed, then I'll usually just go back to the beginning (Or where ever I am going to begin my mix) and do the actual mix through the monitors, no headphones.

I think where you run into problems is if you're mixing exclusively in the headphones just because I don't think you can get an accurate representation of what's being played out to the room, but again, that may just be my opinion.

Cheers,

RJT

mixing in your headphones can be more accurate IMO than speaker and headphone. Problem is, when you spin out live at a club, the outside sound will interfere if your headphones dont isolate the sound completely which is what happened to me with my MDRV-700s.

Yeah, only reason i mix through heaphones is becasue i can't really do it through speakers. Yeah that is a big problem about the sound coming in from the outside to your headphones. But surely if you have really good expensive headphones, this wouldn't be the case?

Do you think i should start to try and beatmatch through headphones or try nad do headphones and speakers. Actually when im hearign whcuh one is faster or slower through headphones and speakers, it's easy to spot big differences, but i find it impossilbe to spot small differences, i can only do that in my headphones.

Use both. One day you might find yourself spinning records at a club or a venue that has equipment that forces you to mix with one ear in the headphones and one ear listening to the monitor. Its happened to many people and they have to adjust quickly so why not learn how to do it before the situation ever arises.

I do both...

Depending on who's equipment I'm spinning on.
I usually do headphones to speakers though, then bring in whats playing on the headphones a little to see if it matches. Then I'll start bringin in the new track, and listen on the speakers to see what it really sounds like.

i practice for at least 2 hours a day and the first hour i mix through the speakers with the crossfader in the middle, so i can hear what im doing.

the other hour i turn all my lights off the system up, turn on all my uv glowy light things and mix as if i was playing to a crowd

I started off with beatmatching in the phones...but ive been making steps toward doing the one ear in phones and other on moniter.

what i do, which i find a lot of help is to just have one ear in the headphone, and if your mixer has volume control for the record playing...turn it up a little bit, not enough to overpower the song your cueing up. after getting used to it for a bit, i'll usually try and turn down the volume for the record that is playing and beatmatch strictly with the moniter and the track im cueing up in the headphones

I started out with monitor/headphone beatmatching, but swear by headphone cueing now. You never know when you come across a mixer with no split cue (ahem...old rane) and the skill comes in handy. Just pray that your monitors are clear enough.
