Thought about this today.

Ok so you have what can loosely be classed as "1999 classics". The crowd want DJ's to play these, because they were the best tracks of that year, or the few years before it. Say, Lost Tribe - Gamemaster, Gouryella - Gouryella/Tenshi etc etc etc. All those tracks we know and love.

Of course, DJ's play the absolute latest tunes, from late 2004 and into 2005.

But what about everything inbetween??? Looking at livesets, I never see a DJ playing stuff from 2001/2002, for example. It seems crazy to me. I think that if some of these were played theyd have the same reaction as the 1999 stuff. Say, if they played Scott Bond vs. Solar Stone - The 3rd Earth, Epsilon Nine - Lifeformations (Classified Project remix), Project Medusa vs. Exor - Moonshine (Exor mix part II), Shmuel Flash - Chilling Moments (Bedrock vocal) etc.

IMO whats going to happen is that new stuff will be remembered for a few months, the 1999 stuff will be remembered forever, and absolutly everything inbetween, no matter how good it is, will be forgotten.

Anyone agree/disagree/have thoughts on this??

Interesting thoughts. It is true you don't here much from 2002-2003 anymore. I guess maybe you just gotta give it time for the DJ's to revisit those tracks.

its the same way with pop or rock music

once a song has been forgotten it comes back later sometime as a "classic"

but besides that you hear mostly the fresh new stuff. Anything from the last year or two just still seems to sound so overplayed that we are sick of it for a few years. For example when you hear "as the rush comes" these days it's a little bit annoying because it was so overplayed. But I bet by about 2008 people will begin to rediscover that song and it will sound good after not hearing it for a while.

It's like the chicken or the egg question.

Do DJs play tracks from '99 because they were so great? Or are they so great just because they are played by DJs rather than stuff from '01-'03 (which would be THE_Chris's side)?

Is the stuff from '01-'03 not so great because DJs neglect them (This is THE_Chris's side here)? Or did the DJs neglect them because they just suck compared to stuff from '99?

Maybe not a chicken/egg question, but it's one of those questions. Whatevs...

It's probably because those classics are from 5-6 years ago. When the tracks of 2001-2003 will be 5-6 years old, ask this question again...

I suspect its more psychological. Every subset wants to establish certain key elements within itself which is can use as identifying markers.

You want a point in time and space where everyone can look and say "that's the golden era of X".

In order to support a golden era you have to pay homage to it, and the easiest way to do that is to visit it repetedly either by directly playing the tracks of that time, or indirectly by playing "Golden Track -2005 remix"

So if you play great tracks from 2002 instead of 1999 you are diluting the importance of the golden era, so in effect you don't do that.

Good tunes will never go away. Some will get better with age. I've been digging up trance classics on vinyl from 1992-1997, and I'm certainly not the only one doing so.

For example, Armin ressurected Li Kwan - Point Zero (circa 1992 or 1993?) on ASOT the fall of 2002 if memory serves me correctly.

this genre of music is also incredibly new compared to other genres. we need more time to make assertions such as those made in this thread. but then agin who knows
