Cool This Can't Be Good??? Please read & Help!

OKAY DJs, I just was gettin' into my set in my room, then back-cued Tomski - Love Will Come (Airscape Mix), and my Ortofon skipped backward and flew into the pitch dots on my Technics, aargh! It must have been on it for about 1/2 a second. I just stopped my set and came downstairs onto the comp to ask you guys your opinion.
What and how much damage do you think it has done guys and gals. They are Ortofon DJ S Blue carts with the shperical styli that came with them, I have them on about 2 and 1/4 gram weight and 1.5 anti-skate, please talk to me.

I have done that too, with my buddys tech12s with very expensive ortofon cartridges(i think they were concordes)..

anyway, from what I hear, it looks really bad, like it will totally kill the needle, but actually it isn't doing any damage to it.

I thought he was gonna kill me when I did it, but I cued up the next record and the needle was fine..

are yours still fine?

Hey Luke

I asked a buddie of mine about that a while ago after I did the same thing to his needles and he said that some hip-hop DJs do that on purpose because of the noise it creates. It can't be brilliant for the needles, but I don't think that one trip on the edges is going to screw them up completely.

Test them out on a crappy vinyl or bad remix & hear what they sound like, just in case.

But I wouldn't worry too much.
BTW. Nice track that Tomski - Love will come, got it next to me in my box )

- A.

Cool

Thank you sooooooooooooooo much guys, I forked out over 1 and a half grand (in pounds) for all my stuff, swapping it now using technics after all he he, and it sounds okay, just a slight grittier in the headphones, fine on the speakers. I don't think I'll be equaling it out though, I'm almost certain it will happen again so I've just added a bit more weight so skip is reduced a bit more.

I can't thank you guys enough for putting my mind at rest

dude..needles have gone thru worse and survived, my buddy forgot to take his off when he put them in the coffin, and when we got to the house the needles had scratched away @ the plastic casing on the tables..it still sounded fine tho..so no harm no foul.

tho I did exactly what u guys suggested, I got a shitty ass record that I didnt buy (just got shipped to me by accident) and well..it sounded fine to me.

so as future hint, take em off before transportation!

good thing i have shit needles. the basic stantons. i think its definitely time for some new ones though. maybe with my lack of hand-eye coordination i shouldnt buy any nice ortofons eh?

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING????

I read this and it never happened to me before, so I tried it to see what you are talking about.
I have a technics with Ortofon Concorde Nightclub E and IT WON'T HAPPEN! The needle will NEVER touch the dots unless you press down on it. Maybe everyones vertical position of the tonearm is not set up correctly? You know that you can adjust the height of the tonearm so it has the correct postition for every cartridge?
Please try that, it should make the life of your needles longer.

PS: Pat, I want to talk about your mix...

I'm worse, I've scratched records, and almost broke the needles I bought with my decks. When I had my friends turntables I was ripping a vinyl, I went upstairs, got in an arguement with the parents and when I came back down the needle was running on the label for like 3 minutes...lol. The ring around the label wasn't deep enough and the needle went right over it.

BTW, Dawn is right. The actual "needle" probably did not come in direct contact with the pitch dots, I've done the exact same thing as you a few times. Worst case, the edge of the cartridge hit it, no worries there.

Peace.

Cool

The needle does actually touch the pitch dots on my techs, and I do have Ortofons, DJ S Blue, took straight out of the packet and put on, the only way, the right way. I did an experiment, turned the decks off and moved the cart down to check, and it just touches the dots, not the black painwork, but it does just touch them.
I couldnt get a noise out of the needle by blowing it, even at full volume on the speakers and mixer.
j_spot what carts do you have, coz i got these little plastic things on my ortofons when i got them, and i just keep them on it and close the hook on the tone arm holder.
Bloody hell, weve had some funny stylus stories, I'm gonna make a new thread for this, to share our pain

what do you mean "the only way, the right way"? If you read your technics manual it will tell you that you need to adjust your tonearm to fit the cartridge you use. Because different cartridges come in different heights. If you look closely there is a ring where the tonearm originates and it says "height adj". I'm using Ortofon, too. The different styluses all have the same height, so if you put your height adj on 5.5 mm, the needle should not touch the dots anymore.
This is also important for overall sound quality, because by changing the height of the tonearm, you change the angle at which the stylus sits on the record.
