If finances permit, I would recommend purchasing a sample CD with a focus on dance drum sounds, such as Blister Pak or Dance Mega Drums 2.

as mentioned before. build your own.

generate 60 hz sine wave.

stick a pitch envelope on it.

draw a downward slope. experiment with the slope. a linear slope is boring and it wont sound like a kick. make it more convex though and it'll sound a bit 909ish. more concave and starts to sound bit psy'ish with a big squelchy click at the start.

i normally put it through 1 linear slope. then i modulate the pitch again with another envelope this time with a different slope. try it out. see what you come up with. create 4 or 5 kicks like this with different properties. then get layering.

Use the TR-808 and TR-909 sounds that are out there.

These are the machines that made dance music possible 15+ years ago. There were no "techno kits" nor "trance kits" back then, it was all about whatever was available and making the most of it, usually via effects and processing.

I hope I don't come across as an arse (but I probably will) and it's certainly not directed at you or anyone in particular, but there are no certain sounds/samples that one must use to produce a certain kind of music... unless of course you just want to go the cookie cutter method of producing and just do exactly what's been done before.

If you want to push the boundaries of sound, ANY sound/sample/source can be used, it's just how YOU go about using it.

Plenty of decent sample cd's out there nowadays available for layering into your own kicks.

Some that come to mind - Techno Trance Essentials (Uberschall), Vanguard Essential ClubSounds Vol 1 to name a few.
