Smiley DJ Advice needed, new to mixing DnB

ok so ive been a big fan of DnB along with trance and lately ive been buying nothing but trance records with the itch to grab some dnb to start spinning...

finally resisted the urge and bought my first DnB record(along with an AVB record) Future Prophecies - Shadow/Chrome

so heres my question - anybody else here spin DnB and if so can you reccomend some tunes for me? also any tips to mixing...

preferably no vocals, unless it goes well, dark, heavy nasal bass , or uplifting... anything badass in general?

some favs are
Teebee - Invasion, Black Rain
Evol Intent - Horns & Halos
Future Prophecies vs Teebee - Dimensional Entity
SPOR - Three Ravens
... stuff like that

Maybe it should be in the music discussion but you get better results if you post in this forum so i'll answer. I like Ben Sage, Tech Itch, Dylan, Evol Intent, Teebee, John B, Raiden, BSE, Concord Dawn, Pendulum, and Pish Posh just to name a few off the top of my head.

let me know if you want links to sites with some mixes

the best of the nu skool:

rawthang feat. kari - scorned [black sun recordings, 2004] (may be discontinued. look out for this. it rawks. amazing vocals. amazing dark euphoric sound.)

raiden - fallin' [renegade hardware, 2002] (NOTE: can only be found on the extremely hard to find AIR EP. if you ever find this you are one lucky son of a bitch this song sends a shiver up my spine every time its played out. wow)

exile and temper d - warehouse [renegade hardware, 2002] (NOTE: can only be found on the hard to find EARTH EP. this *devastates* dancefloors - ive seen it )

technical itch & kemal - the calling VIP [moving shadow, 2003] (nu skool filth.)

omni trio - renegade snares [high contrast remix, 2004] (chilled but dark. its alot slower than most dnb though so it can be tricky to mix)

pendulum - back 2 you [timeless, 2004] (bit of a beaut this one. tranced out. but rude. arsey breakdowns. helluva track though)

hive - neo [violence, 2003] (famous tune. crazy break. probably still obtainable. one of those dnb classics along with pacman and casino royale and fugees or not)

SKC - free my soul [hospital, 2004] (chilled, a bit funky, real easy to mix and all round stonker of a tune. very well produced too. good early night tune.)

concord dawn - morning light (klute remix) [timeless, 2004] (mad break. post breakdown it rips. the vocal is amazing too)

hold tight - 9 2 5 [industry, 2004] (dnb goes back to its roots - very very funky. smasher of an early night tune.)

black sun empire - smoke [sinthetix mix, 2002] (probably discontinued but its a goodie. solid bassline that carries the entire tune. one of those songs which seems alot shorter than it actually is.

rawthang feat. kari - beautiful morning [coded, 2005] (nother sick rawthang tune)

if you are partial to filth. and i mean *filth* i can list some labels and tracks to watch out for. it just depends on how noisy you wanna go. some of fresh's stuff on breakbeat punk is just...crazy. the breaks on mutated x are fucking inside out and theres this monster reece bursting in and out whilst the break sounds progressively more messed up. argh! nightmare to mix aswell.

haha - you may appreciate nightwalker - cheesgrater on grid recordings (2004). its the type of tune that when it drops you just go 'what the holy fuck is that?!'

listen to it and you'll see pretty much what i mean. i dont know anyone that has the courage to spin this one out. it could either go really well or really badly (most likely badly though). but too hard to tell for sure.

i've mixed dnb a couple times for fun and i didn't find it hard to mix at all.

With house you have kicks on all 4 beats....with dnb you need to mix while listening to the snare drum hits on the 2 and 4. Most of the time the snares are very clear and you shouldnt have a problem.

any dnb experts or producers please correct me if im wrong!

Thanks!

yea thats wut i noticed... kinda wierd on some tracks cus you can get snares that change up

when i first cued up Chrome, i mixed it with a stakka & skynet track... dunno the title tho... mixed perfectly... not too hard at all

id say trance is alot harder to mix... but there are sounds in DnB that you just dont find anywhere else

no you are right except i do it with first downbeat (kick) and the snare on 1st and 3rd off beat. then wait for it to loop around again. and see where the kick and first snare lands. you can also beatmatch on the 16th hats and even without any loops at all since most drum and bass is pretty much always in 4 phrases consisting of 4 bars each. this makes it easier than say psy to beatmatch using looped ambience and stuff.

ok exodus we have established you like the filth. you are in a small minority here but you are in luck - im also in that minority! filth is good! if you like off the scale 'holy shit! whats that?!' kind of drum and bass then you'll probably like all of nightwalker's stuff.

here are some top filthy rollers for your consumption (these have been tried and tested and have proven to be utter dirt):

fresh - floodlight [dogs on acid (i think), 2004] (a masterwork of production. just listen to it! fresh is a bit of genius actually. absolutely crazy song with precision sample cutups. i can only begin to imagine how many parts to this there actually are...oh yea, its NASTY. in a 'mummy! im scared!' kind of way.)

exile and temper d - warehouse [renegade hardware, 2002] (as mentioned above. its hard to find but its the big reason to get the EARTH EP. pure unadulterated noise. i lub it. very hard to find. if you cannot hear it, i can send you a sample because this tune is amazingly nasty.)

konflict - messiah [renegade hardware, 1990] (oldie but dirty. veeery dirty. the reece bassline is so fucking gigantic and compressed so much you can hear the compressor releasing when the drums drop out. one of the best from the old skool. EDIT: has been rereleased on vinyl! saw it on juno! get it! get get! get it!)

dom & roland - dance all night (calyx remix) [moving shadow, 2004] (ooooohh myyyy gooooooood. how fucked up is this?!)

corrupt souls - samsara [circle, 2005] (another 'what the holy fuck is that?!' tune. the reece in this one is bendy!)

nightwalker & dykast - biohazard [g2, 2004] (another so whacked out its funny tune from nightwalker. you cannot play songs like this out. everyone will just look confused and leave the dancefloor.)

chris su - the bouncer [spy technologies, 2003] (nu skool dirty. this shreds dancefloors. klangy, reecy dirty FILTH. can be found on the spy technologies battlefield LP)

trace & fresh - mutated (version x) [breakbeat punk, 2002] (fucked up break. fucked up reece. turns heads. nuff said.)

pendulum & bulletproof - mind's eye [renegade recordings, 2004] (the bassline is absolutely messed up. the usual pendulum rudeness. but even more crazy than usual.)

pendulum - vault [31 records, 2003] (their most famous tune. sounds like a themepark ride to hell with the ensuing wreckage of the rollercoaster crashing and bursting into flames at the end. listen to it - you'll get it. pioneered the now infamous 'clownstep')

john b - amnesia [beta recordings, 2004] (listen out for the bassline built out of what sounds like a bass driver exploding. ha! hmmmmm. dirty)

calyx - killa [moving shadow, 2004] (theres a hardcore remix of this out there that is even NASTIER. this one is pretty famous though, at least in dnb circles)

raiden - everything on the utopia EP [renegade hardware, 2004] (all of it is nasty. raiden is the reece technician. the tune utopia is so fucked up its funny. reaktor sounds like a science experiment gone horribly wrong. archangel is...so dirty its wrong.)

thats all i can remember right now. remember - do not play any of this out. this type of music is beyond social boundaries. playing a nightwalker tune out is the fastest way to clear a dancefloor unless you are playing to a crowd that doesnt have any aversion to stupid filth. in that eventuality - go nuts. you will never dance as fast, hard and spastically as you will to these.

i cant thank you enough Derivative... this is exactly the type of DnB ive been looking for... i got a buddy who listens to nothing but DnB and hes only like 14yrs old! he'll definately appreciate these

reason ive been asking for all this is cus im testing this offer from a local record store... its a small shop but they vinyl only, alot of underground stuff... they have this offer that they can get "anything" as long as its still in press or been repressed so im checking that out.. making a list of dnb to add to my bag since its full of trance.. need variety to spin

Future Prophecies came to Dallas not too long ago and they totaly owned the club, theres an interview that they were asked what was their most memorable moment and that event was it hehe... they played some insane tracks, a few were so deep it made me gasp aslong with the rest of the floor... never seen so many people that into the set.. even the ppl who werent on the dancefloor looked up when hit hit those notes on that instrument he was playing... its like a clarinet or something hooked up to his laptop that he played most of the baselines with... mindshattering
http://www.spraci.com/boards/sydney/sydney/94521.html

Absolutely Wicked yo thx, adding these to my list to order

Konflict - messiah
Corrupt souls - Samsara
Raiden - Utopia EP
Black Sun Empire - Driving Insane (Arrakis is nice*)

more to come

aye, future prophecies is deep and dark drum and bass. its not so full on its silly like nightwalker style dnb.

i prefer the deep side of dnb personally.

my alltime favourites are:

raiden - fallin' [renegade hardware AIR EP discontinued] (i can make a clip for you of this song because it sends a shiver up my spine every time its played. it is the most forlorn, beatiful and deeply dark dnb anthem i have ever heard. i would check your PM sometimes soon. i have been searching for the AIR EP since late 2002 with no success)

concord dawn - morning light [klute mix] [timeless recordings] (blew me away when i heard this. another life changer of a tune.)

rawthang - epilogue [black sun recordings] (another spine tingler. oh my god. when this goes off around midnight theres no turning back. it can only get faster, deeper and darker. im getting the shivers just listening to it now!)

pendulum - back 2 you [timeless recordings] (the shivers again! nobody ever heard anything like this in drum and bass until pendulum came along and wrote this little gem)

you must own these.
