No, feel free to look into alternative energy sources. It is a great (and profitable) idea that many companies are looking into. The reality is that right NOW we are dependant on oil...and anything that taps one of our natural resources (as opposed to Saudi resources) while providing American jobs is certainly a good thing. But yes, conservation and alternatives should be looked at as well. If this is the real reason for the left opposing ANWR, I wish they would just admit it, rather than pretending to care about roaming caribou herds (who happen to breed like crazy near the natural gas pipelines...they love the heat).

American oil dependancy is totally unnecessarry, and the only reason why the US is still dependent on oil in such a large scale are very strong oil lobbies in the government. Hell, even Bush himself is a former oil company chief. By building more nuclear power plants and researching fuel cell automobiles, US could completely remove its dependancy on foreign oil in probably less than 10 years. Not to mention the great environmental effects such a shift would take, and the fact that it would also make the country fully compatible with Kyoto protocol. If you compare France and the US, you can see that France that gets about 80% of its power from nukes causes about 2% of world pollution, while the US that gets about 20% causes 25% of world pollution. Now, US is about 5 times larger than France, but that still gives us a ratio of 2.5:1.
