actually, i dont loo at anything like that. bpm, style, etc. are meaningless to me, to a point.

all you need to do is listen to different records and see what YOU like and how well it would fit into your set. create your own style. dont play anything just because its the big tune right now, or armin is playing it, whatever.

the only way to buy tunes is to listen to them. if you really like a tune, you will find a place for it in your set.

when i first started spinning i was very narrow minded as to what tunes i would purchase. i would think about it too much. focus too much on specific genres, etc.

i would go into a record store and go to a specific location/genre and only buy from there. now i go into every section...house, progressive, electro, trance, funky house, tribal, etc....and just listen to as many as i can and buy what i like.

I will tell you something I wish someone told me before I started buying vinyl.

Always buy tracks that you will think fit well into your set. Even if you like the track sometimes it just won't fit into your set. For example, you can't go from a cool house track to some bangin techno.

you have to think about the bpm, the sound, the style, etc. You have to think about all of them, not just focus in on one. Understanding these components will help you build and progress your set.

You have to have an idea of what you want to do and where you want to go with your mix. You take those ideas and try to find records that fit that.

Understanding the style or genre will help you find records faster. Understanding the labels and artists will help you even more. For example, say I want something bangin. I will first check the techno section or trance. If I want something a bit more 'relaxed' but bangin I will check out the house or progressive sections.

Don't limit yourself to one genre. You will find records that you like across all genres if you look closely.

Thats interesting, but if you buy records to just fit into a set wouldn't that narrow your flexablity to go with the flow.

Must pass three requirements for me:

A. Likeable
B. Mixable
C. Fitting (into my style, that is)

If I did that, I would be more broke than a bum on a street.

+1

If I find something that isn't in my genre and I like it, I buy it. It gives me an excuse to find similar stuff to mix it with and to buy that too. Eventually it will all work together as my collection, abilities, and knowledge grow.
