Big Ears Sound System Q's

Okay, so I'm gonna have to start saving up for my sound system for my car soon.

What should I know about piecing it together before I go out and buy? I don't want anything ridiculous, probably just one 12" sub some decent speakers, a decent amp and a 1-CD head-unit.
