connections more than skill...
bedroom DJs are a dime a dozen and it takes u to be more than a good mixer to break into the big leagues these days. you gotta have something special - real special.
as far as connections are concerned, its very unlikely you'll get a gig just by throwin in a mix CD to a club and hoping the manager will fone u back. the truth of it is 99% of club managers are sick of getting handed mix CDs by strangers and as a result, most are thrown in the bin without a listen.
knowing promoters or people who are friends with a promoter are a good way to get in the door. thats how i got my break. getting in the door is probably the hardest part.

It takes some seriously lucky breaks, some really hard work and a lot of heart ache. Above all who you know and in this day and age if you want to get to the top some serious skill or an incredible ear for producing tunes everyone loves. This isn't a quick process.
The upside is that it can be done. And if this is what you want you have to believe. Don't give up on the dream. If you do, you just didn't want it bad enough in the first place.

First... u need skill
But then u need connections... once u get connections u will start to be noticed. u will be asked to play for clubs or private parties. pretty soon you'll be opening for world class dj's. even higher connections can take u places where u've never dreamed of...

I think if you really want to get noticed without all the club politics and connections part, you have to produce. There are too many people who are good at just being DJS.....you need to get you're name recognizable and familiar with people and making your own music is the best way.

True, this is pretty much the only way, these days if you actually want to reach the top.
There's bedroom DJ's left and right my man and whatever you do there's never someone who won't do it for less money. Club owners and promoters don't care how talented a kid is just that they can DJ and not be a bother or expensive. You need something special about you either in Djing or in producing (Producing will be your best bet). If you produce your own tracks then you have something nobody else has, something unique (This really works if your tracks are good ). Look at today's DJ's like James Zabiela who's famous for his scratch techniques so he has something special plus his father owned a record store and this is a great way to get in the door. Make friends with club owners, promoters, dancers, DJ's, record store owners and even the scrubs who give out the pamphlets. Just keep testing out and experimenting with new things and don't give up. If you're just in it for money and all you want is to be performing in front of thousands of people and not go through all the small stuff then you don't genuinely like the music and just want the fame. If it's the love of the music and making people dance then you'll want to DJ no matter where ti is or for how long.

Work work and may I add? WORK!
Oh and yes starting your own night, booking other djs from out of town headliners etc is possibly the most effective way to gain global exposure. Digweed is one name that comes to mind ... he used to be a party promoter
