help! im making the switch...

ive been spinning vinyl ever since i began djing 6 years ago, however, after recently attending wmc i saw enough top jocks use other media that it finally convinced me to incorporate cd players alongside my decks. then, as i was getting ready for work this morning i thought, "what's the point to spinning two different types of media if clubs provide one with the option to go either route? its got to be one or the other." so now, after years of being a vinyl-only dj, i am very seriously considering selling my decks and using the money to buy some pioneer cd players. hell, after burning my vinyl to cd i can sell the old 12"s and use that money to upgrade the studio! still, im very reluctant to let go of my decks and records. im a traditionalist at heart but i realize that the time for change is now. we must make some transition as it appears that it wont be very long before cds become a thing of the past! im caught in the middle right now, stuck between the future and the foundation, and im hoping someone will convince me either that what im doing is wrong and im a sucka for selling out to cds, or that this is a natural progression into a more modern djing world. i would have never thought myself to even consider this transition a mere 6 months ago and now i need help!

well i am sure most djs were playing promo only stuff at wmc, or they only brought cds so they didn't worry about teh huge vinyl case n stuff. Whenever I see a big name dj spin here i always see them switching between vinyl and cd.

so id say just get some cd decks and don't be afraid to start buying songs to download.

Nothing wrong with spinning cd only, best would be to do both.

And as far as I'm aware, you sell your records, you lose all rights to spin any of your backed up records, so they basically become illegal.

That's why i use ssl...

Also, i like my cd decks for hot cues and looping, but my tts are still a important tool. W/ ssl i can still use my edits and mashups without the need of burning a cd. It also has cd player support too.

this CANNOT be stressed enough! if you burn them to cd and sell the vinyl you indeed lose the right to them and therefore are doing pretty much the same thing as downloading tunes from the internet and playing them out and that is a big
NO NO!
if you don't think there's anything wrong in this then i must say that your values are fucked up bad IMO.

Buying vinyls ripping them and selling them (and playing the rips on cdjs of course) is even worse than spinning illegal mp3s in my opinion. Both should never ever ever be done of course.

Hell, over on the texas forums, some dj who plays in clubs and the whole bit was talking about how he does everything completly legally, because he rents vinyls, rips them, and plays out the rips.

Most fucked up train of thought I had ever read...of course I had rarely heard of renting vinyls as well...

Don't sell your decks, as the others have said, use both CD's and vinyl. You'll find its even more fun to use both. The CDJ is a must have these days, and Vinyl is hardly going out of style. Besides your going to find that its hard to find all the tracks you want in WAV or MP3, and thats where your records come into play. As for the legalities of your MP3's/WAV's, when you buy them, make sure you print out a receipt and keep them in a safe place so if you are ever questioned, you can show proof of purchase.
