vinyl addict? are you a dj? if so, how did you pick up even the most basic knowledge? Really interested in doing this as a hobby, since I know it doesnt make money enough to make a living. I just dont know ANYTHING about the equipment and stuff.

Honestly, I just went out and bought equipment and started playing. I'd never had much exposure to what a DJ really does until I was actually doing it with my decks and mixer. Still, to this day, I've only ever seen what another DJ actually does behind the decks once.

I think that is a good way to learn initially, regardless of your learning curve. You'll learn it at your own pace and in a way that works for you. DJing isn't a science and everyone does it differently - so to try and mimic someone elses techniques initially could limit yourself as a DJ. As I progress though, I wouldn't mind seeing how other people do stuff. Maybe add to my experience a little bit but, in the end, my basic building blocks are my own and no one elses. Just my 2 cents.

Best thing to do to learn about equipment is to go into the DJ Booth Forum and just start searching. There is a ton of information in there and it can be very helpful.

Just don't go in there and start a 'I Want To Start DJing' thread, as you will get flamed heartily. One of those threads gets started like twice a week and people get sick of seeing them. So make sure you search first.

Also, I reccomend reading this book. It may sound funny, reading a book to learn how to DJ but, it's a very good read and can tell you alot about the art. Click HERE.

If you are talking about turntables, the "club standard" (meaning what most big clubs have) is the Technics 1200. They've been around for a long time, and since they have been the so called club standard for about 30 years, that means they are pretty good. They might not be the best turntables per se, but you can't go wrong with the Technics 1200's. You would most likely never have to upgrade if you got them. If you buy cheap turntables, especially ones with less torque, then you will be wishing that you had better turntables.
