im just curious if anyone here knows this language or may be currently learning it. I just met a girl at school who is deaf and we have started going on a few dates and she is beginning to teach me and we have to use a notebook to write in to talk to one another. IM really interested in this girl and want to learn sign language now even if her and i dont work out. Im just curious if anyone might know about how long it takes to become fluent in this language. Thanks for any advice. Yes this is posted twice, i posted it in the wrong area before.

actually, the woman i am currently engaged to, the first thing i said to her when i first met her like, 12 years ago in highschool, was "I have a white ford panel van parked right outside, with a couch in it. i can throw on some barry white and you can suck me off now, or later, cuz it has cablights"

i just finished one year of ASL thats about 18 hours a week of non stop ASL for 8 months..

right now i'm able to sign it, read it, but still slow on finger spelling.. if i were to meet a deaf person i can definitely understand 80% of wot they are saying but i would ask them to just start off slow..

i'm not doing the 3 year interpreter course right now only bc i want to go back to university but maybe after if i feel like still being a kid i'll go back..


learn your alphabet... it may be helpful in finger spelling things http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm thats wot i used for my assignments.

to be fluent in it.. LONG Time... amm even the 3rd years are still sketchy in translations.. at school

pen and paper good idea Deaf feel more comfortable with it...try using msn or internet that’s how I talk with one of my Deaf friends.. something you might want to know about there culture... some general rules.. try to keep as much eye contact as possible.. Deaf rely a lot on facial expressions, eye contact, and focus... it sets the tone mood and grammar ... as well it shows that you are paying attention to the person whos signing to you...

hearing ppl have a tendency to listen and just look around and we find that normal ... but Deaf need to know that you are paying attention to them, your not bored, and your interested in what they are telling you..

avoid talking (speech) bc it is rude towards them...
if you guys are talking and someone needs to talk to you excuse your self by just stating "one moment... hold on plzz"
if she can lip read that’s ok but do not assume she can...its safer to write out what you want to say then be miss communicated…
if they are writing do not correct them on their grammar only because ASL grammar is different then English grammar… again it’s a different language and each language has its own structure.

one of my teachers speaks fluent american sign language. i study linguistics and a few times in class she has done examples. it kind of seems complicated, but it cant be that much b/c there are enough speakers of it. from what i gather the grammar is different than english and a lot of facial expressions are used.

i can sign boy and girl and no and basic things like that.
