Computer performance problems

Hello fellow TAs. I seek your great wisdom because the rest fo the internet is quite futile with this topic.

Im experiencing problems with my computer handling a track i am working on in cubase. when I bought my laptop, I totally thought it was going to be powerful enough for what i was going to use it for.

I need to know if there is any neat configuration tricks to enhance my processer power. I dont think its the ram that is the problem, but maybe it is.

I have a gateway laptop (its not a heavy music machine, but it should be able to handle what im doing with it)
Pentium M 1.6 Centrino
512 RAM
1 40 gig HD at 4200. could it be the speed of the HD?

i am using cubase 2 SX
with nothing but a bunch of V-stations, and percussion samples.
hardly any automation

but as it gets into the song a bit, the CPU maxes out and it gets all choppy, and i have to mute some tracks for it to work. the problem, is that now i want to add effects and more automation, as well as more midi tracks, and its frusturating cause i cant work properly.

i have heard that a 1.6 centrino is powerful as a P4 2.5 or so.
i may have been better off with a P4 but its too late now.

Ive tried some mild config setup tricks but its not enough and some programs to help performance but its not doing the job.

so if anyone can help me out with a solution I would be soo greatful

thank you

Yeah, your processor is powerful enough. More ram would do you good. I'm running a 3.12 GHz Pentium 4 in Cubase SX 2 and my CPU gets overloaded very quick with Waves plugins. I tried SX 3 and it works fine, so I guess it's SX 2 acting up. I don't know what else to tell you. V Station is lightweight on my system.

well i dont know why your having problems as well heres a track ive been working on CLICK HERE and it was done on a p2 333mhz 128mb of ram with only bouncing 2 channels to wav's

try asio4all drivers for your soundcard it might help also adjust your buffer settings as if your doing nothing but using softsynths just crank the samples all the way up with the asio4all drivers. also sometimes raising the release on a synth really high will cause it to consume twice as much cpu as it usually would. v-station isnt a really big cpu munchier untill you start using the arp and high release time and shit so just try asio4all drivers if your doing either of thoose things with it. the track above is being worked on in flp which in of itself eats a bit of cpu. so yeah bassically just grab some asio drivers

ohh and also check your running proccesses ctrl+shit+esc and see if theres unneeded shit running in there that can be killed. also if you ahve a problem with spyware some of ti can eat a cpu toa ll hell so might try making sure its all clean on that side.
