im a second year economics student and im thinking about maybe doing a masters abroad, probably in the US

just wondering have any of u guys done it?

im particularly interested in knowing how much it costs and what r my best options for getting sum funding?

all i can say is that my bro's back, and has his accom bill, and its insanely high, they even charged $70ca a month interest on top of it, he's struggled like mad cos they won't let students work in canada on a normal visa and wont give many of the others out, and basically it's virtually crippled us here trying to fund him, just for 8 months

i'm actually on the opposite side of your situation (i'm from the US doing my masters here) but i can shed some light on this..

masters in the US will take two years for most degrees, very few have one year programs so that ups your expenses x2 versus a masters here in the UK. funding for international students is rare unless you are a genius student and you can score a scholarship. most US colleges have decent financial aid packages where you can work off a school loan by getting a job on campus such as working in the library, cafeteria, computer labs, etc. most people will opt to be a teaching assistant or lab assistant in your department of study. this usually is a 2-3 classes a week thing where you either teach undergraduate students your area of study, help out during the labs, or help out a professor by grading papers. if you're lucky, this will usually pay for maybe 40% of your tuition costs. this depends highly on how much you are worth in terms of your academic background, which area of study you are in, and if they want you to help out.

might be able to help you out more if you say which area of study you are going for and whereabouts in the US you are planning to go....

It would be very expensive as people have already stated and be difficult to get sponsorship from the university in the states.

I would recommend though that u try enrol into the the Study Abroad Program at your university not only does give you the chance to travel to US uni for a year, it will be fee paid (i hope) and u have to pay minimal accom. costs obviously im talking about undergraduate here BUT the univeristy (Univeristy of Maryland) with the contacts i made (just by talking to the lecturers) would have given a reduced rate for me doing an MA there (i.e. with the previous experience of doing well there they saw it as an advantage and less of risk).

I spent my whole 2nd year at the Univeristy of Maryland[Washington DC] (sent from Sheff Uni) and i had a great time (went to cancun[spring break] and bahamas) the university life is very different i think more hours, more work, more exams etc BUT there is less depth to the work and more breadth (although one assumes this changes at MA and pHD level) i am seriously considering doing a pHD there though but like yourself i would seek and require funding.

(This is not really helping directly but hopefully it will give u a small insight into it - but i would try if poss to get on a Study Abroad Scheme - It gives u a massive advanatage i've been led to beleive (obviously if uve done well there b4 that is))

Geography isn't that bad surely? Im doing my finals in it now, its quite a broad subject (the 1st year was a bore) but there are alot of options ive kept myself on economic and political geography only, and its turned out that my whole course is more about international relations than what most would call geography. (Physical - hmm i don't like)

Although to be fair im sure Law is an adequate replacement - good luck in it anyway. Don't give up on the travelling part though as i said previously its a great offer for us students even it be the erasmus program to europe and not the US.
