Gemini PT-2100 Question

OK, I recently purchased one Gemini PT-2100 TT.
Its in a very good shape, 2nd hand well reserved.
I'm having a problem though, when I try to beatmatch the pitch isnt so accurate, I mean I can get the 2 tracks together but they dont stay fit for more than 5 seconds tops.
I have checked the dots with the strobe light and they seem accurate enough.
I think this could be because my needle is skipping, has anyone had this similar problem?

if your needle is skipping while your not touching the record during your mix then yeah that would screw up your beatmatch. I never used that deck before but I have used other Gemini's and they generally dont hold pitch as well as most other decks.

Think that deck has height adjustment on it. Maybe the settings are fucked up if your used to decks where you don't need to worry about that when setting up the tone arm? Apart from that check the other settings on the tone arm and maybe try another cart.

If the strobe is staying dead (mine slightly moves actually, not sure left for a bit then back left for a bit then back doesn't affect play atll) on when you set at 0 pitch then I'd think the pitch fader (an associated gear) should be ok.

Maybe even a slightly buckled tone arm?

If your sure it's skipping.

I am going to take a WILD guess and say that you can't beat match.

If the tracks aren't staying together for more than 5 seconds, then yea, your beatmatching skills need some work.

I started out on these decks, and I was able to mix fine near the end before I sold them and upgraded to Techs..

+1...i have gemini pt2410s and they work fine. I've had them for over a year, and the faders and starting to go on them, but just work on your beatmatching

My beatmatching is fine I have been mixing for 3 years, and I can mix fine on other turntables i.e Techs Vestax etc...
But I dont know why the pitch doesnt hold on on my deck...
I will try and replace the needle and see if that helps.
Thanks for your replies.

I'm betting your not used to the pitch control of the Gemini.

I know when I finally got my Technics, after 5 years of mixing
on anything that offered a pitch control, I couldn't mix on the
Technics (Mixing completely off key).

The Pitch controls on the Gemini is more instant when you move
the slider, whereas, the technics is more gradual.

As for the needle, you must have the settings very light, or,
your bouncing around like a madman to get the needles jumping.

When I say skipping I mean that when I do a cue-up I can actually see the needle itself skidding aroound, not the cartridge the stylus itself!

And I noticed what youre saying about the pitch being very instant, well I just gotta get used to it I guess.

I would guess your skipping problem is due to playing on 1200's
as well.

When cueing, I use one - two fingers. This is due to mixing
all those years on weak motor turntables, in addition to
unstable platters. You'll need to train yourself to back-cue
lighter (Less pressure on the record) to prevent the needle
from jiggling while your cueing.

They are not 1200s, so you can't put the same amount of
force on them.

With cheaper Turntables, you learn how to mix very light
(Fingers offering no pressure on the platter).

i had those decks for 2 years and loved them to death... i could mix on them perfectly and found them to be very accurate. i went around a friend's for the weekend and he had just bought techs mk3's and after a few days of mixing on techs, when i came home i couldnt mix for shit on my pt2100s. couple of months later i got myself some nice 1200's from ebay for £500 and have never looked back since...
