Cubase problem (MIDI Output)

Hi, I'm completely new to this stuff so forgive me if I sound utterly retarded.

Anyway, I have a small studio with Korg Triton and Roland JP-8000 synths, and I wanna sequence in Cubase and have the sound come out through the Triton. I've got a 'MIDI IN/OUT-->PC' cable, and I've managed to get it so that when I play on the keyboard, it records it as MIDI on the computer. So the MIDI IN is working.

However, the MIDI OUT is not - I can only get the sound to come out of the computer's sound card, not the Triton, despite all the cables being plugged in. I think the problem lies in the Cubase setup, because 'MIDI Input' is set to "MIDI Port" as it should be, and I assume that 'MIDI Output' should be the same - "MIDI Port". But the 'MIDI Output' setting is stuck on "MIDI Synth A" (i.e. the computer's MIDI) and it refuses to let me put it onto "MIDI Port".

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? MIDI IN works, so I don't think it's the cable or my synth that's at fault.

Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I'm using Cubase VST/32 5.0

presuming your running windows. you may need to change the audio settings in control panel and set your soundcard midiout there ... or use the asio setup util .. failing that the quick setup guide in the pdf manual should show you the way

when i first bought my jp and started producing, i was in this exact same boat. hopefully i can clear things up for ya...

1. for starters, to use your triton as a control AND to record the sounds out of it, [first] you'll need to connect both MIDI in and out to your computer (via midi/audio interface or any other means). you seem to understand MIDI in, but MIDI out will be used for using the triton as a controller for any VSTi's you may be using. midi is just control data, no audio is being transmitted.

2. in order to record the audio out of your triton, you'll need to patch the audio outputs of your korg into the audio inputs of your sound card.

3. you should have the following connections... midi i/o -> computer midi i/o... triton audio out L/R -> sound card in L/R

4. you should have the following tracks set up like so...
--- midi track in record enable with midi output going to the connection that the triton is on.
--- audio track with 'monitor' enabled and the audio input set to the inputs to your sound card. (if you have more than a stereo input, you can add more by going to 'devices' -> 'vst connections')

5. now when you have the midi track selected and you play notes, it should play through the audio track. draw in some midi notes, throw it in record and you should be good to go.
