actually, as much as i love the standard.. it really is not the best hotel in l.a. as far as having all of the elements.
not only was I born and raised in l.a., but i have spent quite a bit of time in l.a. hotels the past year especially because leon and I had to handle the djs when they came in to town.
we definitely had to go thru trial and error with many hotels to figure out which ones were really the best and not just hype.
my results:
the standard: cool as hell to look at. feels fun, modern, futuristic vibe.
shitty service
paper thin walls( i have had MANY DJs tell me they DO NOT want to stay at the standard for this reason. they couldnt sleep.
standard on sunset blvd. is better outta the 2 cuz its on the strip and you can just walk places.
downtown standard... whats the point?
anyone from l.a. can tell you that no one really goes to downtown.
downtown l.a. is mostly a shithole.
unless theres some special event like pvd at the mayan
or your going to an opera.
as far as staying in downtown to be "in the middle" of it all.... well its the exact opposite.
its farther, dirtier and uglier. every dj that we ever had stay in downtown ended up calling me to take them to hollywood, or beverly hills, or santa monica etc... none of thm wanted to be in downtown.
the clubs are in hollywood. my suggestion, personally, would be to stay at somewhere like the W Hotel in Westwood.
First of all, its right in the middle of santa monica and hollywood. you are 10 min away from the beach and 10 min away from hollywood.
2nd, you dont have to get on any freeways to get anywhere cool if you are in westwood. it is super central and you have both options.
westwood is nice.
the W hotel is so fucking cool. and if you are into dance music it is THE spot you need to be. they have blacklights in their elevators and in the elevators they play dance music, house, progressive trance. its crazy. it has a very very tight vibe and the service there is unreal. they have like 10 in the u.s. and they all have good reps.
another cool feature(i think standard has this too, at least used to) is that they give you a cd player in the room so you can bump your lil tunes b4 you go out.
the furniture is super modern and the rooms are really nice. good food too. also, in westwood, you can walk out of your hotel and get to anything you want within blocks- in n out burger, grocery store, liquor store, movies, restaurants, shops etc...
or i'd stay somewhere in santa monica near the beach.
anyway, nooooo downtown!!!! that is my advice.
good luck, have fun and make sure you stop by our club if your here thru a friday!
