I was wondering. How does Sasha get all his tracks digitally on his computer in mp3 format. I mean does he actually buy the music he spins or does he just get it sent to him by all the producers that make the music. Is there a way to convert ones vinyl into mp3 to store on your computer?

hey probably gets sent it on cd or something

you can record vinyls to the computer, its pretty easy. just plug in the turntable to an amp then the amp to the soundcard input and then record it with a wav recorder like soundforge or cool edit, then convert to mp3

actually most producers send out more promo CDs than vinyls these days.

I wonder if hes sent samples, along with full songs. In Live you don't use the full tunes, but activate clips of them. Especially since he edits the clips that he plays, I'm sure hes sent at least some samples.

Yes, Ive detailed this a few times but I have no problems doing so again.

If you want to rip your vinyl to MP3 format, youll need a few things.

1.A Turntable with RCA outputs (usually Red/White with this apperance )
2.A Soundcard with either
-RCA IN jacks (Similar to an amplifier or stereo mixer)
-A Line in or Microphone Port
3.Some kind of Audio recording software (There are many, I highly recommend Audacity as a freeware solution or Sony Soundforge (Formerly by Sonic Foundry) as a pay solution.
4. Stereo Channel Mixer (*optional)


From here, the idea should be simple, but Ill do a quick run-through.

1. Connect your turntables to your soundcard. If your soundcard has RCA jacks, this is a simple plug method.
1a. If you have a microphone or Line In jack, youll need a cable to convert from the two RCA's to a 1/8" audio connector (similar to any cheap pair of headphopnes:
which will then plug into your computer. These cables can be bought at a music store, and electronics store, or mass market stores such as Walmart and Meijers.
1b.*(optional) If you are connecting through your mixer, youll need to EQ your mixer settings, which can only be done through trial and error till you find some kind of generic setting. I will not attempt to define one here.
2. Start your audio recording software.
3. Press record on said software
4. Start your record's play cycle. The software will record any input to the soundcard.
5. Stop the recorder upon completion of the song and you're done! Encode the newly ripped audio and (DO NOT) share with your friends.



That said, Sasha does alot with the tracks he gets. I assume he recieves these songs 'tracked' or split up (bass.wav, kick.wav, supersawPartOne.wav, etc). You'd have to ask him to be certain.

obviousely he gets tracks that are broken up into wav's as well...

Sasha gets the separate parts of tracks sent to him... not mp3 files because they are compressed.. and not anything that's ripped from vinyl. Just the original digital files. Aside from that I'm pretty sure he gets people to cut stuff up for him and prepare it and give him the pieces so he can use it with ableton.

MIDI doesnt actually send sound, but only information to a machine which produces the sound based on what it "knows". Based on what I've heard from Ableton, it must use wav or some other kind of "hard" audio sounds to do the things it does (or have the world's largest sound bank).

Continuing with that though, its possible Sasha collects the sounds from each person's project and plays them using MIDI but that doesn't seem extremely likely. Ive had several oppurtunities to read up on both topics but never did for lack of interest or applicability. Probably a good topic to pick up on now...

i'm almost positive that sasha gets the separate samples from a tune.. such as the melody, the bassline, etc.. from the artists.. which gives sasha a complete leg-up over any other dj trying to use ableton by chopping up their mp3's. i wish producers would send their original samples my way

You are all wrong.

Sasha actually did an interview (wish i could remember the site) where he specifically stated that he has a crew that chops up all the tracks into parts to use in ableton. If you think about it, its highly unlikely that all the producers of all his tracks would agree to just sending him the individual parts of the tracks.

Not really, considering Sasha's level of notoriety and the fact that he could play a full house every night if he so chose. That's alot of exposure for ANY producer.
