Talking Can one tap a cell phone?

is it possible to listen in on someone's conversation on a cellphone? someone asked me to check if it was possible, but i have no clue. do anyone know?

they suggested there might be a scanner or something but, technologically, it seems difficult because the scanner would have to filter out the numerous other cell phone transmissions bouncing around the environment and the scanner would have to signle out one phone.

is it possible to do this? how much are materials? stores?

merci

Older scanners work. We have one built in the mid-90s that my dad used at Nascar races (...yeah). I've been able to pick up a few cellphone conversations on it. Nothing exciting.. most notable was about the Dallas Stars. Heh. I heard that newer ones are built with cellphone frequencies blocked out but I'm not totally sure on that.

It is exceedingly easy to monitor cell phone calls. There is a scanner... interference is not a problem because each phone has it's own frequency (thus why you don't pick up other people's calls on your phone). I cannot tell you the cost of a monitor, however, I'm pretty certain they are not legal in most places. Search the net and you'll likely find out how to make one using your own phone or a radio or something.

I'm sure that there are scanners out there, but Im not sure whether they're manufactured to allow you to target specific frequencies, such as those reserved for cell phone traffic.

same rule applies to the internet.

but yes it is possible, i have done it before

you need:

1 Roll of Foil Paper
2 Antennaes
1 AA Battery
2 Feet of Wire
1 Nokia BG-Series Cellphone (Cheap on eBay)
1 Soldering Iron

Step one:
Open up your Nokia phone and look for the portion of the motherboard in the phone that says X63-A (this is your motherboard model number), solder your wire to the 3rd circuit.

Step two
Take that wire and solder it to the end of your attenae

Step three
Turn your phone back on, and dial the number:
*9885291819005726185988**

You should hear some static noises.

Your phone is now basically a radio tuner. If you hit the up and down menu keys you can change channels and frequencies on your phone to listen into phone calls.

Now that you've read this, I made all of that up.

newer phones are digital tho, so the voice is encoded and sent that way as data, so you need the specific decoder for that networks encoding method (which is pretty much the same across the board most of the time) or otherwise u get noise...

Decoders arnt to hard to find, I dont know how to do it myself, but you could probably bust apart an older phone and figure it out.

The newer cell phones are just about impossible to tap this way. Note: nothing is impossible. The newer cell phones use FHSS frequency hopping spread spectrum. Effectivly the cell phones frequency is hopping based on a sequence agreed upon between the cell site and the cell phone. If you could match the sequence you could tap the signal. There are two issues in matching the sequence

one: the hops are very fast, typicaly around 10us thats 0.00001 seconds.

two: The sequence is very long, typicaly the sequence will be days long before a repeat.

In "Enemy of the State" they did something with ESNs. I assume it could actually work, but who knows what kind of resources it would require.
