Software-ONLY DJs?

Hey,

I've just started DJing using software only (PCDJ Red atm), no hardware controllers, just the software and my mouse. I'd like to think i'm getting pretty proficient at it, been recording some quite pleasing sets lately.

I was just wondering whether any DJs in clubs will be using a similar set up to my own, do all DJs in clubs tend to use some sort of hardware component in their gear? If so, is there any reason for this? I cant see it being a lot easier than what I'm doing at the moment to be honest.

Thanks guys

Alex

Someone staring into a laptop is fucking boring whether your DJing or performing live. If your going to go the laptop route, then buy yourself ableton live, a midi controller and run some hardware or vsts off it atleast for live tweakage. But then it become more like a live set and less like a DJ set and thats a different kettle of fish. It takes much more effort and time to set up a set like that.

Someone clicking a mouse to move a virtual slider is not going to get a crown even romotely into the music experience. I just want to say that I'm not against laptops purely because of the live mixing possibilities available with them that no other format can come close to but if your just going track to track, you can do that with a pair of TT, and your not offerering anything new. Infact your taking away all the interesting parts of watching a DJ play... the cueing, the hardware... all the visual representation of the DJ interacting with the music.

Its fine for the bedroom, but you can't expect people to come watch you click a mouse through your mp3 collection.

+1 Nothing says boring than a DJ who clicks a button in software and then does a god pose.

Yeah I would have to agree.

I saw Sasha play a set using abelton on his Mac Laptop with a Midi controler. He did some truely amazing stuff but there was definately no vibe compared to a dj set.

Stick to a Dj set or go the Complete live set using software, Hardware and Instruments

I don't think it's so much boring as it would be HILARIOUS...

Haha, yeah, cheers

I wasn't actually planning on playing in clubs like this, I was just wondering whether people did. Gonna be looking into getting a set of Tech 1200s and a mixer after my exams. And then i've got to work out where the hell to put the damn things

Your doing it the hard way.

Most people use an external mixer and run the outs of the
computer into line 1 and 2 of the mixer. I have PCDJ Red.
You see very few clubs using computers. But, Wedding DJs
swear by it.(I do weddings time to time and it pays off there)

I agree on being boring. Definitely, not something you
would consider enjoyable if you like to mix.

I just don't see myself being able to get into the entire act/scene at a club if the DJ is spending the entire time staring into a computer screen and not the crowd. Sure he could do more complicated stuff with sounds but that is not the point of me going to the club in the first place. But more power to ya. Good luck.
