My First Attempt @ Progressive (128Kbps Sample 5:56)

Hey guys,

As some of you may know I started producing last year. Mostly experimental trance and such. This is my first attempt at a progressive/trance track. It isnt complete but I am about 75% done with it. Suggestions and comments are welcome and encouraged.

For those of you that have heard my previous tracks let me know if my sound is getting any better. I was linked to some tutorials by some of our awesomely helpful fellow Trance Addicts for proper EQ, beats etc and the links on TA were very helpful as well.

Thanks for listening

Goddess - Live To Die (128Kbps Sample 5:56)

you sound has definately improved a lot

however, here comes the critique hehe... you shouldn't ideally be changing the melodies in a track until at least 1:30 into it (intro sections excluded), especially with progressive. the track is pretty fast for progressive too. the percs are pretty cool but the samples are still pretty crap.

some of the synths like the filtering pad sound really good, but the actual melody synth doesn't work too well at all imo. the bass is also very simplistic and the constant note doesn't help.

although the percussion is good, it needs more variation and fx, same with the melodies. progressive music is built upon subtle tones and changes at almost every scale, whereas this is pretty much in your face and quite repetitave.

in sum, this is a lot better than your previous stuff and a lot better than the stuff i could hack out and call a track at the same time in my production learning curve. all that i can say is try and take what i have said on board, i may be wrong but hopefully it will help you.

sorry if i'm talking crap i'm still winding down from exams now, complete brain-fry.

Ok got ya.... so maybe it isnt progressive then I guess i shall label it trance . I didnt use any samples for this I pretty much put everything together on my own with whatever comes with FL (besides VST's). I really suck at making basslines. To be honest I wasnt very happy with the main synth myself but I am having a hard time choosing another one. I will def put more variation into it. Right now I was thinking of changing just about everything after 3:25 altogether.

When is a good time to drop the first melody and then the next...See the thing with me is I dont really like to drag anything on too long because as a listener I know I get bored so I am sure others will too.

i like your sound, how its nice and chilled. maybe a bit fast for progressive, but whatever speed you like because its your song
i like the arp at 136
btw are you chording the pads, i cant really tell
one of the notes on the arp sound a bit off
maybe a little repetative too. might want to try changing the octave every now and then
the percs are good, but maybe you can add some more as well
i like the pads that enter at 330
maybe have the bassline a bit stronger too
yea the synths are pretty good, but it just gets abit repetative, just keep working at it

everything sounds fine!
hummm.... i think the only things that bothers me about this song are:

1) the kick/clap are too weak
2) the congas/tablas (or whatever u used) sound pretty cheap
3) uhmm the 'lead' blends in with the pad in the background, so it's a lil' hard to listen to it... maybe using a less 'pad-ish' lead (unless you wanted it like that)?

k, well, bye
