Have a listen to the first track I've ever posted

Hello all.

I've decided to bite the bullet and finally put something online that I made. This is my third song but the first I've posted. It's called Brisbane 4am. It's not a remix of Tiësto's Dallas 4pm or Breda 8pm. It's merely a salute to himself and a shout to where I'll be living in two weeks.

I've tried posting the sample on the site but it will not work so I'm sticking it on soundclick. The song is unfinished. I'm thinking of a thinnish pad during the main break to fatten it up a bit. Also I think there could be too many random sounds and reverse hats and claps. I'm not sure yet. Give it a listen and all feedback is appreciated. As long as you say it's a brilliant song! Kidding obviously. Constructive but not offensive comments are welcomed. So here's the link.

Declan Keyes-Bevan - Brisbane 4am (Unfinished at the moment)

Sorry about the 128kbps. Sound click won't let me post a 192 sample.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers, Dec

Interesting track dude, a like the techy feel of it and theres some nice fx in it. Nice intro, the strings could do with a bit more tweaking though, but its getting there. Cool effect at 1.21. You use it a lot in the track... I think its pretty tight.

The hihats needs some more layering. Try dropping in some open hi hats on the kick and a few more closed hihats slightly after the main ones. Should help you get more of a rolling feel to it. Theres was something else about the percs and then I realised it was the clap... stick a big nasty reverb on that ****** and use liberally. Will trance up your track big time

Diggin on the melody up until 1.50 and then it just gets a bit generic or something. It all starts coming together at 5.30, kinda digging on the groove and then it looses the feel at 6.20. A progression of the good part of the melody would be better than that random arpeggio you bring in.

Anyway, nice work mate. Have fun in Oz! Drop us an email if you make it down to Sydney

up to 1:25, sounds quite german/euro, was expecting a cheesy kick but it wasn't luckily.

i dont really like the hihat, it sounds out of sync and u need a bit of reverb on it.
also a bit of reverb on the clap will help.

the tune isnt really my style but it sounds decent.
the pads are good.

the synths are a bit computer-ish, try cutting the filter frequency or the *sustain* a tad.

up to 5:15, the song sounds all fine and very dancable but i really dislike that hihat, and i think others will agree with me, it sounds really out of sync and would be a bitch to mix with.

and also i agree, u need a bit of variation like reverse kicks or claps, whatever sounds best.

edit: sorry i meant sustain not decay :P

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm taking today off as it was a heavy night last night, my hands are shaking and it's a bank holiday weekend so there's more fun to be had tonight. I'll get back to the track tomorrow I hope and make some changes. Good advice dudes.

Cheers, Dec

What sort of tweaking do you have in mind for the strings? There's something just missing from them alright, but I can't put my finger on it. As for the hats I'll try the open on the kick. Quick question for the extra ones after the kick what sort of quantise would sound right? 1/32 maybe? As for reverb, yeah very much needed. The song is 100% dry excetp for the reverb coming straight from the synths. Must wetten up the whole mix.

I must try reworking that melody alright. I love the first one alright and some sort of progression would definitely sound better. It's definitely needing a bit of work. It's only a week old at the moment so still in its infancy.

What do you think of the filtering and sound effects put into the main breakdown? I wasn't sure if I'd overdone parts of it?

Anyways shout me up with some advice when you get a chance

Laters, Dec

Strings are a bit tricky and personally I dont use them a lot, but from what I've learned, using a number or oscillators and dutuning them in opposide directions and changing the pulse width for each one can help. Best bet is to find a synth that does them well. try giving cheese machine a go.

Yeah, try 1/32 on the hihats. Sometimes something even on a 64th beat can give percussions the right sort of feel. You want to make it feel like the kick is leading the charge and everything else is sort of trying to catch up with it, so offsetting elements just slightly behind can work well.

Filtering sounds fine, perhaps a tad too sharp on the resonance. I think the synth in general need some attention. They are cutting through the mix really well at the moment, but kinda sound too harsh. More fx and eqing the highs might help somewhat ar maybe try layering an instance of the track and use a synth with a longer delay and reverb.

Anyway, keep at it mate. A week isnt very long to spend on a track!

Yeah that's certainly true. I just get impatient and ahead of myself sometimes. There's a lot of work to be done on the track.

I'm using sampled strings so not sure about detuning them. I've only just got Sampletank and I'm still learning the ropes. Hopefully it has some feature that'd be equivalent to detuning. I don't really use samplers much so I'm not sure. I'd say a bit of careful EQing might spice them up a bit.

I must get onto the synth alright. I've decided to chuck the arpeggio you mentioned and instead make the lead morph and change. This should keep the flow of the track moving better than before.

I'm off to the beach now so it'll have to wait til tonight.

Thanks for the advice
