Yep, that's normal. Your eyes always see incomplete things and your brain tries to complement with the most likely object. When you're very tired, you brain does this less efficiently and comes up with strange solutions. Once I was at a party and hadn't slept in three days. There was a sofa there and a guy put his coat on it. Everytime I turned my head and looked at it, for a split second, I saw it as a person staring at me.

I had a long stretch of sleeplessness over the last couple weeks over classes/finals - about 4 nights up. Then at the end, I tried to play a game of chess with my roomate. Not only did I suck terribly, but unless I looked veerrryy closely at them, (they were the engraved stone pieces), they were making faces at me .. and kinda 'floaty.'

Or maybe I was high.

the only hallucinations ive ever seen when im sleep deprived is lights have halo's around them, things get fuzzy, and sometimes ive seen weird shit like i was sitting one time in a kitchen, just sitting there, and i look out into a darkened living room, and then back, and in the corner of my eye, i thought i saw a dark figure move past the opening to the kitchen.
