Survey...sort of

Without going into specifics, and realizing that a lot of people on these boards don't even have a full-time job, and recognizing that a lot is dependent upon sector, employer, etc...

Does anyone have a good idea of what a "good" raise should be? I don't care if you break it out in percentage terms of absolute dollar amounts. I'm just curious. I've heard of some people getting only 1-2% "token" raises, I've heard of much larger ones as well. I've never been one to study other people's compensation or to get caught up even caring about what Joe Blow makes. For me, it's about individual happiness; but admittedly, I don't really have a barometer to measure my own success, so I'm posing the question here hoping for some insight. Thanks.

I'd say that it depends on your current salary, the success of the company, and how great you are. No simple % or $ answer.

You're no help!

However, those are all salient points.

I would agree. Of course, it takes the niceness out of it when you break it down and figure that's an extra $833 per month Gross...then you break it down and figure it's an extra $400 per paycheck(assuming you're on a bi-weekly pay schedule)...then you put your taxes in and realize that you just got an extra $200 per paycheck on a $10K raise. Sounds a lot better before you break it down to what it really amounts to!

Then again, maybe that's just an indication of how good I am at spending money! (or maybe it's the Mrs.)

< 3% = FU inflation raise
3-5% = nominal raise
5-9% = not bad! raise
> 9% = don't complain raise

Of course it all varies by industry. But that's my estimation given my 3 or so years out in the work force.

I would not include a bonus specifically, as they vary and are not always guaranteed. That said, when I get my W-2s at the end of each year, I will compare this year's gross with last year's gross and figure my percentage increase. It just doesn't feel right, to me, to categorize a bonus as part of your regular payscale.

Cash bonuses are nice. It always creates an urge to go out and get a big-ticket impulse buy, and then try as hard as I can to stash away the leftovers for savings.

well, if your not satisfied with the "gross" progress of your salary, or the lack thereof, then i think you may have answered your own question. b/c i can almost guarantee you that the "net" on you're W2 hasn't changed much either despite, whatever. you can thank my president for that i'm kinda kidding and i'm not.

...but you're right. i spent a good part of my bonus on big ticket shizzle. the difference between you and i though is i have socked away nada.

i stoopid.
