EU Summit

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4097686.stm

Seems like its going to be a really interesting summit, with many important things to discuss. mainly the new long term budget (UKs rebate included) and the constitution.

Hopefully France can give in on the farm subsidies and the british rebate will be taken away. Hopefully too they decide to not cute on lisabon agenda and not on rnd, and also that they will continue with the ratification process.

Oh well, will be a few interesting days comming up now!

EU should just listen to Blair and pause elections on the Constitution.

My bet for this summit is that all the big guys get what they want - UK gets rebate, France and Germany get huge farm breaks.

You Europeans are and have always been a bunch of selfish bastards

Not gonna happen.

The British, by choice, do not possess full membership in the EU (ditto Switzerland), so will refuse to pay the large-economy contribution to the EU budget expected of the richer countries. The Brits want all the economic perks of the EU and none of the responsibility for the "European" social model -- which really pisses off France, Germany, Holland, the Nederlanders, etc.

The idea with continuing the vote on the Constitution is to see whether the majority would pass it as-is. If only a few countries declined, then those countries could be pressured (so goes this wrong-thinking) into going to the polls again.

Cheers,
-Noble

Er...the UK is a full member of the EU and Switzerland is not a member at all. I hope the UK does give up its rebate and France gives in to CAP reform. The UK is (apparently) using the rebate to force France to concede over CAP so fair play to em (if thats true of course!)

Sorry I worded that poorly.

Both are integrated into what was the former EEC, both practice select EU fiscal policies, but neither are full economic members. This is also why neither uses the Euro. For the same reasons, Norway didn't join at all. Too rich to want to, re: UK.

Check out the map in my sig (the Swiss want less to do with the EU, the UK moreso, but both only as associates at best, not full partners, so to speak). On the map, the Swiss ain't included, the British are. This is by their choice.

Why do you think the English are entitled to a rebate?

Cheers,
-Noble

The reason Switzerland isn't on your map is for the same reason Canada isn't on your map! It aint a part of the EU!! And it has never been part of the EEC. The UK is a full member not an associate member. We dont take part in the Euro but that is all (Greece and Denmark dont either) The UK is as full a member of the EU as France or Germany or Italy is and I'm confused as to why you think otherwise?

Oh and that quote by Churcill in your sig was never meant to include the UK!

What does that tell you? lol

And Greece does use the Euro. And Denmark is preparing to.

Denmark is outside of the economic union, and also not participating in any future military cooperation (we thought Nato was enough). Don't know why you would take on a nick such as you have, with so little knowledge on the actual state of the union?

And the UK isn't preparing to join?!

Was gonna add "unless they have recently joined" as they weren't original participants. Greece was too poor to pass the economic criteria. Denmark is fairly anti-EU (like the UK) but was certainly economically powerful enuf to join at the start so I would imagine they are in the same boat as the UK.

Is it the Euro you are talking about when you say "associate member"? Cos the UK, with or without the Euro is a FULL member of the EU...

LOL! Maybe its supposed to be ironic or sarcastic?!

But Denmark isn't outside of the economic union or there'd be no point being a member! (You mean the Euro too! )

And your right bout the military (along with Ireland and Austria for different reasons) so I guess UK, Denmark, Ireland and Austria should all be relegated to "associate" no better than bloody Israel or Morrocco!!
