amp starts clipping when i hook mixer up to it

i posted this about a month ago but can't find the post now to see the replies so i guess i'll just have to post it again, i searched like hell all over this TA board.

i have a pioneer home theater receiver with 5 cerwin vega speakers (1 middle channel, two 12" towers, two rear). the mixer i'm using with my turntables has a built in amplifier and two monitor speakers, it works fine by itself but everytime i hook it up with rca's to the pioneer receiver to play through the cerwin vegas, the receiver starts saying "amplifier overload" and the volume cuts out.

does anyone know if there's any workaround for this? what would be causing this, the mixer's built in amp? if so, what mixer should i get to work with my receiver? i want to use my 2 monitor speakers with the vegas is basically all. thanks in advance

i've seen this happen when i hooked up my mixer (back then) to a receiver. play with the volume. what worked for me back then is actually looking behind the mixer and chosing between the outputs (booth, amp and tape). I think i had it in the amp output and then tried the tape. That fixed it. Hope this helps.

Tape/Record Output

Yes, try the TAPE/RECORD OUTPUT (RCAs) from your mixer. This is a line-level output which will not overload your amp and usually ignores the MIC signal, the tone controls and the master level. (You probably won't be able to do talkover on a microphone.) Depends on the mixer, tho'.

Any free line-level RCA audio input (CD,AUX,LINE,TAPE,etc.). Do not connect to phono RCA inputs as the phono signal from magnetic cartidges is usually low-level and requires RIAA equalization. The phono circuit in the receiver applies this equalization to the phono signal and boosts the level as well. Older receivers will have the phono input. Newer ones usually won't.

that's what was doing it, i had it on phono. thanks to all the TA's for the replies. i changed it to another channel and adjusted the volume, seems to be working fine! this is bad as hell i can finally play my mixes through more than just the monitor speakers!
