house & techno are probably the most well known forms of 4x4-orientated edm, & people not fully into the scene and its subgenres often use house/techno to describe anything with a 4x4 beat, more often than not cos they don't know any better

Additionally, trance and house music serve much of the same purpose; music,that is not hip-hop, for dancing to in a club. In this way, they are somewhat interchangable. Though there are several subtle differences between the two, trance and house are also incredibly similar. It takes an afficionado of one or the other, or someone who is familiar with the subtleties that mark each genre to distinguish between the two.

But doesnt dat mislead people even more? i mean House is House , Trance is Trance....just like poeple in US calling everything TECHNO!...

Few people care to admit it, but at one point everything was techno. It took several years for subgenres to arise and somewhat meaninglessly so. So trance and house have subtle distinctions, so what? Mistaking one for the other is similar to mistaking ska for punk rock or hip-hop and r&b. Additionally, no songer is ever solely trance or house. They often have elements of both in their construction. Many people have adopted tempo as the sole means of distinguishing between the two. They establish a 'magic tempo'(a tempo at which one genre ends and another begins) and categorize each song they hear based on its tempo. This doesnt seem right, but it's easy to do, so most people dont have a problem with it.

Another thing is DJs dont always exclusively play trance... some of them start off wid some house and then move onto Trance so mayb the MC is confused

And in my part of the world when I say I like listening to trance people simply tell me so whose ur fav artists....Astral Projection, Infected etc So obviously they assume Trance = Psy Trance

I dun blame them coz of Goa... I mean ppl refer Psy trance as Goa trance

So no wonder they tell me that
