Hi ppl

eny1 might be kind enough to enlighten me on how to achieve the top volumeof the mix without distorting the sound and keeping the mix clear
hope its not someting people ask every day

The basic answer is limitng, but please, don't go beyond +4dBu on a -14 (EBU) dB FS calibrated VU meter. Use a limiter plugin such as the Waves L3 to limit the peaks and bring the level up.

Really, you want to look into doing a proper mastering job if you're looking to attain a respectable maximum volume though, which generally involves a combination of equalising, stereo imaging, compression and limiting. If you're not willing to do all that, then simply don't maximise the volume and just work on creating a good mixdown.
