Well, if you haven't studied it at all and you're just looking for help on the rudiments, this site might help - I just found it on a google search and it looks pretty solid.

http://www.musicarrangers.com/star-theory/

It's important to know about things like key signatures and chords and intervals if you don't already, but if you're looking for information that's really going to help you with composition, then after you learn the rudiments, you're going to have to look into harmony & counterpoint, and depending on the music you're into, you might want to look at jazz/funk versions as well (when people speak of harmony & counterpoint, they are generally talking about the western, Classical branch of it).

For the latter, I don't think you're going to be able to find a very good online tutorial or anything of that sort... these are complex topics that people spend a couple of years at university (or private lessons) studying. I am sure you could find these courses offered online, though, and there's usually a hefty discount if it's not for credit.

I would say be very cautious about any "free" harmony/counterpoint tutorials you do come across; you may be reading one person's opinion or experience with it, but it's only really useful to learn in the "academic" sense - that is the plain vanilla theory - which leaves it to you to find the practical applications and know when and where to break the rules.

Hope that helps.
