Hello fellow music lovers!

Got myself
an ECHO MIA-MIDI soundcard
a STK VX-804FX console mixer.
and a set of THX Audio ST-90 studio monitors.

I allready own a Korg KARMA and a JP8000, a studio headset and some other stuff.

Got a couple of questions. How should I do my cabeling? ATM i got sound, and it sounds good, but it's just basic!
How should I set my volumes on the mixer,monitors and software mixer?
What is the best way to record through the mixer?

I really hope you can help me, or else I will spend MANY hours trying and failing. Spent 6 hours allready!

not sure about this really...but if you can't cabel mixer correctly...you better give it up...I believe...or maybe RTFM?

I know i'm not helpfull here, but I'm in a slightly drunken mood and this just sounds like you are one of those rich boys who just get a lot of toys and don't know what to do with all that...

You're in a bad mood, yup!

First of all, I've worked quite a lot this summer, and this equip. ain't that expensive. I paid for it myself for you information. It costs around 800$.

I have cableded it so it works, but I want MAX qual. and MAX utilization of my equipment.
The reason i'm asking these questions is because I don't have much experience with advanced equipment. As a producer, I'm starting to sound professional. Therefore I decided to upgradge a little.

Anyone else, a bit more constructive and a little bit less prejudging?

I believe that it should be enough to set it up the usual way

instrument -> mixer in -> mixer out -> soundcard -> speakers
instrument2 -> mixer in2 -> mixer out -> soundcard -> speakers
instrument3 -> mixer in3 -> mixer out -> soundcard -> speakers

I don't know what is so complicated about it? just plug the cables into the right holes?

sorry for prejudging...maybe I know less than you do about it, but I believe there's nothing to do bad way, if you did it bad way it wouldn't work?

The thing is that I got a digital input S/PIDF, but I don't think the RCA phono cabel is the right kind.

I'm gonna find out of this TOMORROW! I'm tired now. Gonna buy some new cables if I have to. I'll make this work.

You'll want to crank up the volume on all your synths and play a polyphonic passage or something on the synth while bringing the channel levels up on your mixer until just before it clips. Once this is done for all your inputs bring the overall mixer master out to an acceptable level. This will keep the noise floor down and the harmonic content of the synths and pc up. You'll also want to make sure all sliders not in use are turned down and also you'll want a good ground to keep down interference. Keep in mind a lot of digital synths will produce noise on the output when not turned on. Typically a gate in the software of the synth will only quiet the outputs when it's powered on.

my mixer has 2 separate outputs: control room and main out. Control room goes to the speakers, and main out goes to my soundcard.

That way, I can mix, solo and pfl any input I want without affecting the recording. This method's better than relying on your soundcard's output for the speakers, and it enables you to record anything done on the soundcard simultaneously.
