Hi folks,

I'm new to making music (actually noise at the moment!?), although I'm keen, I have limited ability. I have no background in music, I cannot read music or play an instrument (I suppose I could be in a boy-band then perhaps).

I have been mucking about with FL5 for a couple of months and in all honesty have some up with little worth talking about, apart from understanding the software more & more.

I was wondering with all you seasoned pro's out there, if you would take time to pass on one piece of advice that you wish someone would have told you when you were just starting out.

Like for me a burning question is 'how on earth do you get sounds to complement each other?' (I can make a nice beat loop, bass loop & lead, but getting them sounding like they should be together in the same tune is currently beyond me).

Anyway thanks in advance for any posts & I have no doubt that others will also find this topic useful.

then worry about the technicalities later, you'll improve over time!

Open the demo songs that come with fruity. Dissect them and learn how it's made.

Don't expect too much, it won't happen over night, infact far from.

Aslong as you put the effort into reading articles, tutorials and posts you will improve, fact. It just takes time.

It's quite obvious that you must learn music theory first, then learn how to make your songs sound better.

I’d say don’t worry too much about the end products of your endeavours. Just mess around. Press buttons, twiddle knobs, move faders. Most Importantly, remember the golden rule: Have fun!

-learn the 'rules' so you can break them
-trust your ears

Trial and error comes into your situation, but as long as you enjoy messing around in FL5 you have HUGE potential.

Listen to trance music and get the feel of it (that is how I first started nearly 6 years ago with FL), I'm now using top end software & hardware.

Never give up if you enjoy it !

Creating music is about expressing how you feel (sorry to sound like a hippie) but if you like it, go with it,

In relation to dance music, listen to tunes, take them apart piece by piece and you will learn the basics, after that try and create your own style,

The only bit of advice I can give you is, DONT fall into the trap of making trance that sounds like everyone else, theirs TOO many producers out there that sound the same and thats what is wrong with the trance scene at the moment,

learn to actually LISTEN to music

you should be able to train your ears to break down and concentrate on each individual layer in any track

yeah, learn the rules so u can break em good advice
