Depends. Macs are typically more expensive for what you get and nowadays they use the same processors as PCs. I think your better off with a PC, due to the wide availability of software. You can get Windows for Mac, but it's not as stable as Windows on a PC. For school, you probably will want Microsoft Word.
If you needed to say print out something on a school computer from your laptop, you would need Microsoft Windows and a CD burner. You can get a decent laptop for around $499 or $599 (or however it would be in Canadian) from Toshiba, Dell, Gateway or HP.
A Dual Core laptop might cost a little more, but for basic stuff..you really don't need one. Macs are basically just known as more stable..have less problems and viruses, but they aren't as perfect or immune as Mac fans make them out to be.
