i am going to buy a microphone for my productions. it will be used solely for vocals. i read that a "large capsule condenser" mics are the best for vocals. Suggestions? Recommended brands/models?

i got some mxl mics. one is vocal, one is instrument. they are really good for the price. just gotta get a mic pre-amp (i recommend behringer).

those sound nice.....i could use the vocal and my friend could use the instrumental for his cello.... top of my list right now, thanks
and i'm pretty sure i can use my mixer (pcv275) as the pre-amp, right?

i'm a big fan of Audio-Technica's large cap condenser mics. At-2020, AT-3035, AT-4040... any of those will sound great on vocals (guitar, too!). Rodes' mics are pretty nice too. the NT-2 or NTK will work wonders. all the mentioned mics are very affordable.

yeah, as long as your mixer says it has a pre-amp you should be all set

I have to second that. All those microphones are great value for your money. I especially find the AT 4040 and 4050 really underrated microphones.
Hey. Its impossible to go wrong with a Shure SM58. They are industry standard for stage vocals but woek great in a studio as well. If you want something better, then look into shures studio line. They have everything from budget to top dollar mics.
The shure sm57/8 mics are dynamic mics and better suited for live stage environments, they're ok for studio work but do not compare to a condenser.
I use a Rode NT-3, NT-1 and a cheap MCA-SP1 to throw about (not that I record much vocals, I just have them for geek's sakes)

Wow.. dude is looking for "large capsule condenser" mics and you throw shures "crap" sm58:s at him. Im no expert in mics either but i have an AKG C3000B which is absolutely brilliant compared to those cheap dynamic mics like sm58. Would recommend it to anyone who wants clear good sounding recordings. Downsides are ofcourse the need for phantom power and a good recording space, cos you can hear everything! with it. So if seriously considering "large capsule condenser" mics you should also check out a place for doing the recordings.. vocal booth or just a separate room without a computer/other soundsources/echoing walls etc.
