Flannel Shirt Appreciation Thread
Also known as "The Pure Hotness on Earth", the word "flannel" is derived from the Welsh "gwalnen" meaning "sacred woolen cloth woven by the Gods". Woodsmen, lumberjacks, and farmers, blessed with their wisdom, knew about the potential of this fabric. It protected both from the cold in the winter, and from sunlight in the summer (and in warm countries, as the one I live in). It wouldn't burn in the fire, it didn't rot and it could even conduct electricity, giving birth to superconductors in the last century.
Called "Phlannalos", in Greek, it was worn by the Greek Phalanx (see the similarities?) who introduced the incredible piece of clothing to both Roman and Chinese people. The Chinese actually shipped a few shirts to Japan, where the "Sarunai" (we all know they never get the words right) wore them, giving birth to a whole feudal system that changed the Japanese history for millenia. The price of these shirts in Japan was so high that they had to wear armours on top of their shirts so the owners of these shirts wouldn't be brutally mugged. Even the mytical Egyptian Pharaoh characters had their name inspired in the plaid shirt they wore to protect themselves from the harsh weather in the desert.
In the 90's, thanks to the people from the American Northwest, land of some grunge musicians (who are not important anyway) and Nou, flannel shirts became famous worldwide. edit: As Moral Hazard pointed out, it's probably because of the proximity to Canada, where plaid shirts are used both in formal situations and even as lingerie, which was the main factor in the survival of eskimos for so long. It became fashion and anti-fashion at the same time, due to its holistic nature. It was and it wasn't. It was creation and destruction. The Yin Yang is actually inspired in the image of a flannel shirt inside a washing machine.
Japanese schoolgirls and Scots also wear plaid skirts, for reasons no one really knows. It's often been connected with fertility and the Scots drinking habits.
