Hello everyone. I have been reasearching about Djing for a while now, and have been an avid electronic music programmer, making a multidude of my own songs and such. I have become interested in being a trance DJ for a sort of a hobby, but have not been able to find any good rescources on the net about trance DJing as it is all mostly about hip hop, and I generally do not enjoy hip hop music at all. If someone could just explain to me what is involved. I have read about and found many stores that sell loops on records that are played, but that just doesnt seem right to me. Why would someone play loops that they didnt make themselves? But the majority of you guys seem to like spinning vinyl rather than cd's, but cd's would allow much easier using of your own loops and tracks, etc. I am not planning on buyin ga dub cutter any time soon, and I dont want to spend 70-100 dollars getting my loops put onto vinyl by someone else. But everyone seems to be spinning loops that are already made by other people? And the process of DJing just confuses me. Do you play a drum loop on one turn table, and then synth leads on another? How do you change different synth loops? How would you change to a different part of a song? I am just confused, if anyone can answer these questions and generally just explain it to me. sounds like you should just start producing. vinyl djs mix music not necessarily loops. i take songs and mix them together to create layers and moods, and arrange them in a logical an continuous set. i am not necessarily trying to make a song from scratch, even though i could drop in a different beat from another song, or melody...or vocal

Producers make tracks for DJ's to spin, thats how it works. Some producers get into DJing after they have established themselves within the EDM community, but just because they produce doesnt necessarily mean they will be great DJ's. Some DJ's begin to produce to get a sound out of tracks they might not get from an original or previous remix.

Amatures who spin vinyl (like myself) pay money to spin the tracks that are made, the famous DJ's get promo copies from the producers or their distributors, and if the DJ's like it, they play it - this gets the track some promotion and hopefully those amatures will buy it.

Other amatures that spin CD's might not necessarily pay for their tracks (because of all the peer 2 peer sharing programs), it makes it alot easier on the wallet, but personally its not my bag.

As for how the actual DJing works, well first, you have to tap into ALL of your creativity and ALL of your interests in EDM, and make sure you understand and know EXACTLY what kind of EDM you like. Like in my case, its house, but theres SOOOO many different types, it takes time to really hone in on what gets you off. Once you've figured out what you love, its youre goal to understand the crowd. You need to know when the crowd is into what youre spinning or not, which takes me into another point... youre track selection makes you or breaks you. It is also your goal to choose to play tracks that you know will mix well together, whether its youre choice to solely mix against the beat or mix harmonically.

strange that cos i often find myself listening to sets and not skipping tracks that i dont normally like . I guess its all part of the mood thats being created.

What do you do with the 2 turntables though? Do you play a drum loop on one, and then put synths and whatever else on the other one? What other kinds of equipment do DJ's use?

maybe if I was spinning with 3 decks.. But if im spinning on 2 decks then ill beatmatch the song I wanna play (in my headphones) to the one im pumping out of the speaker. then when im getting close to the end of the track ill start to bring in the next track and slowly transition over..

everyone has a different style. You cant really define how to mix trance. There are no set ways.

Oops double post. Hmm, alright. So you can use more than one deck. So what I am getting here is that the majority just plays dance songs one after another. I just dont understand how that can be fun if the songs arent your own.

Liking certain tracks is one thing. Mixing them using your own creativity and to create a mood, a journey and energy is really quite a different experience. I guess it also depeneds on who you are playing to.. mixing at home, compared to in a club, is an ENTIRELY different experience Either way there is nothing quite like that perfect transition. You could start a thread on why we actually choose to dj

Being a dj I suppose is like being an painter or artist. Every persons style is different.

Do you dj? Also what type of EDM do you listen to? (assuming you do else you wouldnt be here )
