recovering information on harddrives

does anyone know how to recover deleted files from harddrives that haven't been completely wiped?

google or call a hard drive recovery place (but that can be very pricy)

that's what I'm trying to get now. rather not have to buy anything, just trying to get compromising pictures off a friend's computer.
