Static sound for high frequency sounds.

Hey guys,

I've been having a bit of a sound quality issue...

It seems that when I play my records, the High Frequency sounds (such as the hi-hats and snares) make a static sound (much like the one you hear when a radio is not tuned right).

For example, instead of the hi-hats sounding like this: "tsst" they sound like this: "ksshhh"... in other words, it doesnt sound crip.

At first I thought the problem may have been my speakers/headphone... but when i got new headphones, the same problem still occured.

Could it be the Cartridges? or possibly the mixer or speakers?

Here's my set up:
Stanton T.80's with 500B cartridges
Stanton DJ PRO-2000 Headphones
Numark DM1002 MKII Mixer

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

same problem

I have the same problem using 1200s, a Shure M44 cart and the Numark 3002x (same as yours but 3 channels)

Try the following:
- increase teh weight of your arm
- replace the mixer and try again
- try remounting the cart to make sure its aligned properly

Since my carts are pretty decent and I have teh same issues, i'm guessing its our mixer?? If you can borrow a friend's mixer, try and see if it goes away.

well, i tried adding more weight on the tonearm... usually I put about 4-5g as advised by Stanton, but this time I put between 7.5 - 8.5 grams, and it helps the problems, but the static sound is still present a little bit.

I have to upgrade my carts soon anyways (since these are the cheap ones that came with my turntable) so hopefully that will solve the problem. In the mean time, I'll try and borrow my friends mixer and carts just to test it out.

I hope its not our mixers man... because that way i dunno what i'd do to fix it.

Does anyone else out there have a Numark mixer they're having trouble with?

Thanks for the help so far,

It's not the mixer...or at least i don't think. I know that the dxm seriers of numark mixers have some sort of limiter thingie (don't know what it is called) so that you don't get distorted sound unless of course your spearkers are clipping. The culprit is your vinyl is dirter. Vinyl collects dust because of static, which is why some people use bounce dryer sheets. The dust causes the crackling and sound degradation. Also you are setting your wieghts way too high. If you are just practising in your room then set the counterwieght to 2 grams, because unless you crank the volume up really high, there is no need for the extra wieght that wears the records away
