Traktor

Yes, I've used the search function and have read all the threads it produced, but I wanted to have my own one too!

I'm thinking of spending my hard-earned £130 on Traktor. I've never mixed with Vinyl before. I've tried vDJ and Ableton etc but from the demo of Traktor, I really enjoyed mixing some mp3 tracks and found it easy to use, AND it sounded good. I know there's lots more I can do with it too, but I'm currently wanting to buy the full version.

However, I've been reading in this forum (and from personal experience) that the beatmatching sometimes goes horribly out of sync. I'm worried about paying this much for software that I manually have to tap in a rhythm to, or 'On-the-fly' beat match. This isn't because I'm not musical. Au contraire. It's just I don't want to be having to sort this out in the middle of a set!

Are there any other negative points about Traktor besides the beatmatching issue?

Well, it have good and bad points for you to learnign i think.

The beat-matching it's not 100 % accurateñly, I mean some track sit does ge the bpm correctly, but from many songs it is not right, although you can tap it manually to set the bpm of the track, then you can get the records in sync.

I have learned a lot of stuff witht raktor, you can see how tracks are composed, and that might help you to understand them, and many other things about djing.

but the sync its not 100 % , so i cnanot go out and spin with traktor

You should try to learn by yourself the beat-match, so i recommend you to get some cd's or vinyl, it will be more fun i think.

You can learn with traktor the track selection of your sets, the different moods, to create a journey, you just won't learn to beatmatch.

If you want to be a good dj, I recommend you to play for a while witht he demo, and save money for a cdj or vinyl.

Ther eis another software called Mixmeister, it gives you the key of the song (About 80% accuracy, I've heard), and the BPM copunter i think it's more accurate than traktor, but I'm not sure abotut his software ,m coz i haven't use it yet.

Good Luck-.

Re: Traktor

The beatmatching issues experienced by many people can be tamed. The manual helps a lot there.

The biggest problem with Traktor is that you will be dissed by some of the competition - those who have invested in the established equipment and methods. And others will have the mistaken impression that computer DJing is cheap and easy and everyone uses pirate downloads. I would think the dissing would be severe in the UK or any big city where there are lots of DJs.

I use Traktor and like it a lot.

traktor is a great learning tool. if you're serious though, i wouldn't bother unless you bought final scratch, and if you're gonna get final scratch, you might as well get RSS Live.. which would involve buying a mixer and decks and all that.

I used to have beatmatching difficulties with traktor, but you can alleviate the problem by not depending on the sync button. the sync button rarely gets it perfect but you can get flawless mixes if you actually use your ears, you know?

also, i wouldn't use traktor unless you owned a soundcard with multiple outputs and a mixer, just because using the keyboard as hotkeys for the software mixer that traktor provides is inefficient, and straight up lame.

so, in conclusion, you're better off getting decks (if you're serious about spinning).

edit- i like traktor's pitch bend function too.

To get better results @ beatmatching you can use a beatgrid on each track.

*bump*

Thanks for the replies. I tried vDJ etc but found Traktor to my preference.

One thing though, with chillout/down-tempo tracks, it rates them as being really really fast bpm tracks. Weird. Any ideas???

you can limit the bpm guesses. Eg. 125 - 140 or sumfin like that. I used to use traktor heaps and loved it. Great to learn on. Then got my vinyl decks and it took me a few weeks to get used to them as probably opposed to alot longer. but yea, if u right click the bpm i think u can set limits to what the bpm can be.

I used traktor for a long time before I finally got real equipment and let me tell you -- because of traktor I was able to mix with my real equipment right out of the box. The beatmatching isnt really a problem -- traktor will get it right most of the time but even then, you will need to manually adjust it slightly. Using both the sync button and the manual pitch control will improve both your feel for beatmatching and the mix itself. I highly reccomend this software although I've really lost favor with it for two reasons:

1 - itsnot physical so I cannot manipulate two controls at once which i find crucial to live mixing.

2 - although i had two soundcards in my computer i could never get traktor to work with both at the same time for output and cueing.

same here. I have used traktor for a few years now. The feel of turntables became more natural after a few weeks. Traktor really helps you understand the basics of mixing.
