Israel Finally EvacuatingFrom The Gaza Strip

Well it's about 38 Years too late. Illegally occupying, not to mention being there despite basically all international sanction saying " don't go, stay away".

Discuss.

Matt, I agree.

I don't care who's right or wrong but I hope this will aid in the future stability of the region. I feel bad for Sharon, his own people hate him but I respect him for having the guts to go through with it.

Couldn't agree more. Kudos to Sharon for taking the big step. Let us hope that both sides keep the peace.

it's very true. You can also see the emotion on some of the soldiers faces when they're escorting them out. You know they don't want to do it. But now, with the jewish settlers gone, how will palestine react, and how will they control the land?

Because as far as i know, Israel still run i believe the water system, economy, and other aspects of the region.

Obviously Sharon did it to gain something...common its SHARON.
He's over 80 years old why would he change his lifelong zionist views only now? Obviously its part of a bigger scheme of things that sees Israel securing the West Bank or maybe theres a lot of US $$$ promised to them if they pull out. And whats with all of this media hype? They're only a couple thousand settlers who are pissed because their god says its their land. Sorry CNN but you cannot get me to feel sorry for them.

Nevertheless, regardless of his motives, its still a positive step, and it will be very interesting to see what happens next.

The Gaza Strip is a narrow strip of land in the Middle East not internationally recognized currently as a de jure part of any sovereign country. It takes its name from Gaza, its main city. It is one of the most densely populated territories on earth, with a predominantly (99.4%) Palestinian population of about 1.4 million in an area of 360 km². 69% of the Strip is currently under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority, while the remaining territory (mainly the areas containing and surrounding Israeli settlements, as well as borders and main roads) is controlled by Israel [1]. It is a focus of dispute in the long-running Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Geographically, the Strip forms the westernmost portion of the Palestinian territories in Southwest Asia, having land borders with Egypt on the south-west and Israel on the north and east. On the west, it is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

The Strip's borders were originally defined by the armistice lines between Egypt and Israel after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which followed the dissolution of the British mandate of Palestine. It was occupied by Egypt until it was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. In 1993, after the Palestinian-Israeli agreements known as the Oslo Accords, much of the Strip came under limited Palestinian Authority control. In February 2005 the Israeli government voted to implement Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan for unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip beginning on August 15, 2005. The plan includes the dismantling of all Israeli settlements there, and the removal of all Israeli settlers and military bases from the Strip. It has been speculated that after withdrawal, Israel will still retain some offshore maritime control and/or a small strip of land (the so-called "Philadelphi Corridor") alongside the Egypt-Gaza Strip border, although Israel's defense minister has said that Israel will leave this corridor as well. The Israeli government continues to face significant opposition to the plan and its implementation from the settlers and their supporters.

Six-Day War
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Six-Day War (Hebrew: מלחמת ששת הימים transliteration: Milhemet Sheshet Hayamim), also known as the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Six Days' War, or June War, was fought between Israel and its Arab neighbors Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. It began when Israel launched a preemptive war on its Arab neighbors; by its end Israel controlled the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. The results of the war affect the geopolitics of the region to this day.
